Teeth spacing is a dental anomaly characterized by
interdental spaces and lack of contact points between
teeth.

Spaces are very common in the primary dentition and

their presence is a favourable sign for the development of
permanent teeth. In contrast , lack of spaces strongly
suggests that crowding may occur in permanent
dentition.
TYPES OF SPACING B/W THE
PRIMARY DENTITION

 GENERALISED SPACING

PRIMATE SPACING

LEEWAY SPACE OF NANCE

GENERALISED SPACING:-
Usually seen in deciduous anteriors to accommodate larger
permanent teeth.

Utilised to partly account for incisal liability.

During 1st transitional period of mixed dentition, deciduous

incisors are replaced by permanent incisors. Permanent incisors
are much more easily accommodated in normal alignment in
cases exhibiting adequate inter-dental spaces than in arch that
has no space.
PRIMATE SPACES/ SIMIAN SPACES/
ANTHROPOIDS SPACES
This space is present mesial to the maxillary canine and
distal to the mandibular canine.
This space is used for early mesial shift.
EARLY MESIAL SHIFT:- In spaced primary dentition
and a straight terminal plane relationship of the primary
molars, the permanent 1st molars emerge at about 6yrs,
move the primary molars mesial, close the space distal to
the primary canines and allow the maxillary molars to
emerge into a Class1 molar relationship.
LEEWAY SPACE OF NANCE

• Described by Nance in 1947.

• Definitions:
 Combined mesiodistal width of permanent canines and premolars
is usually less than that if deciduous canines and molars.
The difference between the two is known as Leeway space of
Nance.

OR
 The amount by which the space occupied by the primary canine and
first and second primary molar exceeds that occupied by the canine
and premolar of the secondary dentition.
MEASURED VALUE:
 For Maxilla: 0.9mm/segment = 1.8mm
 For Mandible: 1.7mm/ segment =3.4mm

IMPORTANCE OF LEEWAY SPACE

 These spaces are utilised to achieve Class I
molar relationship via medial drift of mandibular
molars greater than maxillary ones
WHY THE LEEWAY SPACE IS GREATER IN
MANDIBLE THAN IN MAXILLA?
• In contrast to the anterior teeth, permanent premolars are smaller than
primary teeth they replace. The mandibular primary 2nd molar is on average
2mm larger than 2nd premolar, while in the maxillary arch ,the primary 2nd
molar is only 1.5mm larger
• The primary 1st molar is only slightly larger than the 1st
Premolar but does contribute extra 0.5mm in mandible.
• The result is that each side in the mandible arch contain
about 2.5mm of what is called leeway space while in max-
illary arch , about only 1.5mm is availabile.
