Conducting survey is one effective way to
gather information or data from the
respondents. Surveys are used to get the
pulse and preferences of particular group
of people to be used as the basis for
conclusion and recommendation of the
study.
It's preferred by most researchers because
surveys are relatively inexpensive, useful
in describing characteristics of a large
population, can be administered in many
modes and can solicit more valid and
comprehensive answers from respondents.
But the proponents of the study must
first determine what questions to ask,
how to ask them and who to ask.
Types of Survey
1. Interview- This type of survey is more
personal form of research compared to
giving out questionnaires. The
interviewer has the chance to interact
directly with the respondents and can do
some follow up questions.
From the interviewees end, it's easier for
them also to interact with the interviewer
especially when the question seeks
opinion or impression. However, this
method can be time consuming and
resource intensive and the interviewer
has to be well-versed about the topic and
well-trained especially when things need
to have contingency responses.
2. Questionnaire- this is a survey
instrument used to collect data solicited
from set of oral or written questions
given to respondents.
Designing a Questionnaire
1. Determine the goal of the
questionnaire- Before developing your
questions, determine first the objectives
of the questionnaire you're about to
design. Ask yourself what kind of
information you will need, what
hypothesis you will test and what's the
best design for the questions.
2. Decide on your question design- Based
on the information you want to gather,
decide on the type of questions you want to
utilize in gathering data. The following are
possible “types of questions used in
survey.”
a. Dichotomous- this question is
answerable by yes or no, agree or
disagree, or true or false. This is
quickest and simplest question to
analyze but it's not highly sensitive
measure.
1. K-12 will uplift and improve
Philippine educational system

Agree Disagree
b. Multiple Choice- this question allows
easy analysis of results. It's composed of
three or more mutually-exclusive
categories. The problem with this type of
question is that the preference of the
respondents is not in choices.
2. Which newspaper offers the most
credible and reliable news update?
A. Philippine Star
B. Philippine Daily Inquirer
C. Manila Standard
D. Manila Bulletin
c. Ranking or Ordinal-Scale Question- this
type of question compels respondents to
rank items or choose items in a particular
order from a set. For instance, the
respondents are tasked to order things from
least to the most important or vice versa.
Rank the following from best (1) to worst
(5) based on their performance.
_____Rodrigo Duterte
_____Noynoy Aquino
_____Gloria Macapagal Arroyo
_____Erap Estrada
_____Fidel V. Ramos
_____Corazon Aquino
_____Ferdinand Marcos
d. Likert scale- this type of questionnaire
deals with scaling responses in survey
research. This type of questioning allows
the respondents to assess phenomenon
based on a given dimension.
In the statements below, encircle your choice using the
following:

1 Strongly agree
2 Agree
3 Disagree
4 Strongly Disagree

K-12 program levels up Philippines educational system

 This helps Filipino graduates to be competitive in the global
job market.
 Because of K-12 program, students emotional growth is
hampered.
e. Filter or contingency question- this type
of questionnaire determines the
qualification or experience of the
respondents to answer the subsequent
questions.
Have you ever smoked cigarette?
Yes No

If yes, what prompted you to smoke

cigarette?
_____stress reliever
_____curiosity
_____peer pressure
_____to solve constipation
f. Open-ended question- this gives the
respondent a chance to answer freely. No
choices are given to limit his/her answer.
Now that you are enrolled in K-12, I
wonder if you will tell me how you feel
about it.
1. What do you like most about this new
system?
2. What do you dislike most about it?
3. Are you happy/satisfied with this new
system? Why or why not?
4. Is there any possibility that this might be
changed? Why or why not?
3. Validate your questionnaire- Once ready
with the questionnaire, an expert must be
consulted to validate it. Then alongside
comments and suggestions of the expert,
the researcher should revise the
questionnaire. Once revision has been
made, questionnaires must be pre-tested
using a small number of respondents and
difficulties they encounter must be given
attention. Revisions must be further made
if necessary.
4. Conduct the Survey- When the
questionnaire is hundred percent ready, the
survey is now conducted with reliable and
credible respondents.
Group Activity (Per Committee)
Choose at least one of the different types
of survey and create your own survey
sheet. Write it on 1 whole sheet of paper.
