FREEDOM
• The quality or state of being free
• To be free is a part of humanity’s
authenticity.

THE POWER OF
VOLITION
•VOLITION – the power to make your own
choices or decision
•For ARISTOTLE, human is rational and he
believes in Intellectual Freedom. He
believes in the power of WILL, ACTION
and REASON.
If there is no intellect,
there would be no will.
-Aristotle
WILL – a strong desire or determination to
do something.
The will of humanity is an instrument of
free choice.
Will is borne out by…
1. Our inner awareness of an aptitude.
2. Common testimony of all human beings.
3. Rewards and punishment of rulers.
4. The general employment of praise and
blame.
Human Act Vs.
Acts of Human
• Human acts are actions done with “will” and
“knowledge.”
•Acts of Man are actions with the absence of
either “will” or “knowledge.”
LOVE IS FREEDOM
•For ST. THOMAS AQUINAS, human being
is a moral agent with spiritual and body
elements ; spiritual and material.
•He gives the fourfold classification of law.
FOURFOLD
CLASSIFICATION OF LAW
•ETERNAL LAW - The decree of God that
governs all creation.
•NATURAL LAW - The human participation
in the eternal law and is discovered by
reason.
•Human Law – concerned with ends
determined simply by humanity’s nature.
•Divine Law – Deals with interior disposition
as well as external acts and it ensures the
final punishment of all evil doings.
•God is LOVE, then LOVE is the guiding
principle of humanity toward his self-
perception and happiness - his ultimate
destiny.
SPIRITUAL FREEDOM
•For ST. THOMAS AQUINAS, we human
are both material and spiritual.
•God is Love and Love is our destiny.
INDIVIDUAL FREEDOM
•For JEAN PAUL SARTRE, human person is
the desire to be God. Human person builds
the road to the destiny of his/her choosing;
he is the creator.
EXISTENTIALISM
•a philosophical theory or approach which as a
free and responsible agent determining their
own development through emphasizes the
existence of the individual person acts of the
will.
THEORY OF SOCIAL
CONTRACT
