ONE-WAY&TWO-WAY SLABS

Asst.Prof.Dr. Onur MERTER
ONE-WAY REINFORCED CONCRETE SLABS
Definition: If the number ‘e’ is greater than
‘2’, then the RC slab is called ‘One-Way’ and it
bends in the short direction. It hardly bends
in the long direction at all. (from the theory
shells and plates).
e=Ll/Ls>2
Secondary (long) direction

Here; Ll: The long span, from axis to axis.

Main direction
Ll Ls: The short span, from axis to axis.
 The slab works in its short direction.
Ls  In the short direction, gretaer bending moments ocur.
ONE-WAY REINFORCED CONCRETE SLABS
 In the long (secondary) direction of one-way slab; moments, displacements and strains
etc. are very small.
 However, in the short (main) direction of one-way slab; There are greater bending
moments and displacements.

All one-way&two-way slabs (with beam) like ‘beams’

are ‘bending’ members [under Pure Bending Effect]

 Slabs can be considered as ‘continuous beams’ which constitute side-by-side.

ONE-WAY REINFORCED CONCRETE SLABS
 Slabs can be considered as ‘continuous beams’ which constitute side-by-side.

So; one-way slab system can be considered to be a

continuous beam with 1.0 m (unit) width.

Using Approximate Methods;

we will obtain BENDING MOMENT (M) DIAGRAM

CONTINUOUS BEAM COEFFICIENTS

 This is an approximate method which calculates the moment (M) diagram of
the continuous beam (continuous one-way slab model).

NEGATIVE SUPPORT MOMENTS:
 When the support of the slab is an RC beam, the design moment (which is calculated by using
continuous beam coefficients) is calculated in beam axis. The axis moment value is converted (is
reduced) to a moment on the slab side by the formula: (TS500)
