STATEMENT OF CONVENTION
A. Represents the writer’s feeling of assurance that the test of truth or falsity
can be readily determine and that there is already general agreement about
the truth of the statement itself.
B. A statement of fact claims to be true in an objective, measurable way.
C. Statement of fact are subject to confirmation by observation. Equally
important to the critical thinking process is that observation may not
verify the truth of the statement.
D. Statement of fact are ordinarily quantifiable; i.e., some kind of
measurable numerical value is linked to the statement.
EXAMPLES OF STATEMENT OF
FACT
A. The export of cut rose can easily become one of the must lucrative
businesses in the Philippines.
B. Many more will die because of political considerations and unwise aid-
spending.
STATEMENT OF PREFERENCE
A. Roses are more beautiful, smell sweeter and are easier to grow than any
other flower.
B. The Aquino government should have toughened its stand against the
burgeoning insurgency.
