Lane Departure Warning provides an alert to the
driver if they are beginning to leave the traveling
lane.
Introduction If there is a risk of the vehicle leaving the traveling
lane unintentionally, the system provides visual
and audio alerts to prompt the driver to take
action.
• Today, road safety is an important issue in the world.
Thousand of car accidents occur every year. This may lead
to loss of many lives. The influence of traffic density and
the speed of driving play an important role on the driver’s
perception of the road. It is often observed that if traffic on
roads is less, lanes and traffic signboards may be ignored
by drivers.
Objectives
• The system called Driver Assist System (DAS) which alerts
the driver about the lanes and signboards can be of great
assistance. It can prevent accidental changes of lane due to
the lack of driver’s concentration. Lane departure warning
systems monitor the position of the vehicle with respect to
the lane boundary. When vehicle leaves lane
unintentionally, the system delivers a warning to the driver.
• The system visually monitors the left and right
side lane markers of the traveling lane. If there is
a risk of the vehicle leaving the traveling lane
unintended, the system flashes an indicator and
sounds a warning Ring.
System
operation * System function only when lane markings are
clearly visible on the road.

** On some models such as the Nissan LEAF, the

steering wheel vibrates (haptic sensation) and a
visual alert is provided.
System
operation

Press me
• The system uses a front-mounted camera
located in the upper portion of the windshield to
confirm whether the vehicle is within the white
(or yellow) lane markers of the traveling lane.
System
mechanism
• The system uses a camera to confirm whether the vehicle is
within the white (or yellow) lane markers. If there is a risk of
leaving the driving lane*, the system displays an alert on the
dashboard and plays a warning ring. The system also assists the
driver to avoid leaving the driving lane by applying braking
force to each wheel***.
How the (1) The system detects the white (or yellow) lane markers using
technology a camera located in the upper portion of the windshield.

works (2) If the system determines that the car is getting close to the
white (or yellow) lane markers, it plays a warning ring and
the LI indicator located within the dashboard flashes**

(3) The system also applies braking force to each wheel*** to

help return the vehicle to its original lane, assisting the driver
to remain within the lane.
How the technology works

• * Except when the driver

uses the turn indicators

** In the new Nissan LEAF,

the steering wheel vibrates
and a visual alert is
provided.

How the technology works

There are two methods are used for lane detection:-

1. Line Gradient Estimation Method

2. Hough transform Method

1. It should be work at dark in night.

2. Should work when clear lane marks are not available or lane markings are worn
out i. e. (white/Yellow)

3. It should be install all variant of vehicle models (cars, trucks, buses, trailers)
