LANDSLIDES

LANDSLIDES
Landslides are defined as the mass movement of rock,
debris or earth down a slope and have come to include
broad range of motions whereby falling, sliding, and
flowing under the influence of gravity dislodges earth
material. Landslide occur when an earthquake,
floods/prolonged rainfall, or volcanic eruption occur.
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF LANDSLIDES ?
There are two main types of landslides :

1.Natural Landslide
•Gravity •Forest fire
•Geological factors •Volcanoes / Volcanic
•Heavy and prolonged Eruption
rainfall •Waves
•Earthquakes •Freezing and Thawin
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF LANDSLIDES ?
There are two main types of landslides :
2.Anthropogenic Factors
•Inappropriate drainage system
•Cutting and deed excavation on slopes for
buildings, roads, canals and mining
•Change in slope/land use pattern, deforestation,
settlements, agricultural practices on steep slop
WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF LANDSLIDE?

• destroys everything and anything that comes in

their path (roads, rail lanes, agricultural
production, land area, etc.)
•loss of lives (depends on the place and time of
occurrence)
HOW WILL I KNOW IF THERE’S GOING TO BE
A LANDSLIDE?
• springs, seeps, or saturated ground in areas that have
not typically been wet before
•new cracks or unusual bulges in the ground
soil moving away from foundations
•Sticking doors and windows
•Visible open spaces
HOW WILL I KNOW IF THERE’S GOING TO BE
A LANDSLIDE?
• Broken water lines and other underground utilities
•Leaning telephone poles, trees, walls, or fences
•Dropped-down road beds
•Rapid increase in a stream or creek water levels
•Rapid decrease in creek water levels even though ran
is still falling or just recently stopped
WHAT TO DO DURING LANDSLIDES?

⇒Quickly move out the path of the landslide or debris

flow
⇒If inside the building and there’s no possible way to
scape, protect your head and take cover under a desk,
table or other sturdy furniture
WHAT TO DO AFTER LANDSLIDES?
⇒Check for injured or trapped person without enter the slide and assist
rescuers
⇒Help vulnerable group persons in neighborhood for emergency
assistance
⇒Listen to local radio or television stations
⇒Be alert for flooding which may occur after a landslide or debris flow
⇒Report damaged utility lines to authorities
⇒Replant damage ground
⇒Seek professional advice for evaluation of landslide hazard and
reducing landslide risk
LANDSLIDE WARNING SIGNS

•Springs, seeps or saturated ground in areas that are

not usually wet.
•New cracks or unusual bulges in the ground, street or
sidewalks.
•Soil moving away from foundations, or the tilting or
cracking of concrete floors and foundations.
•Sunken or down-dropped road beds.
LANDSLIDE WARNING SIGNS

•Rapid increase in creek water levels, possibly

accompanied by increased soil content.
•A sudden decrease in creek water levels even though
rain is still falling or just recently stopped.
•Unusual sounds, such as trees cracking or boulders
knocking together, might indicate moving debris.
AREAS PRONE TO LANDSLIDES

•On existing old landslides.

•On or at the base of slopes.
•In or at the base of minor drainage hollows.
•At the base or top of an old fill slope.
•At the base or top of a steep cut slope.
•Developed hillsides where leach field septic systems
are used.
SIGNS OF SINKHOLES

•Fresh cracks in the foundations of houses and

buildings.
•Cracks in interior walls.
•Cracks in the ground outside.
•Depressions in the ground.
•Trees or fence posts that tilt or fall.
•Doors or windows become difficult to open or close
WHAT ARE SINKHOLES?
A sinkhole, also known as a
cenote, sink, sink-hole, swallet,
swallow hole, or doline (the
different terms
for sinkholes are often used
interchangeably), is a
depression or hole in the
ground caused by some form of
collapse of the surface layer
THREE TYPES OF SINKHOLES
Cover-collapsed sinkholes– develop quickly in a matter of hours
and cause catastrophic damage
Cover-subsidence sinkholes-forms slowly overtime with the
ground gradually subsiding or deflating (types of events can go
unnoticed or undetected
Solution sinkholes - occur in areas where limestone is exposed
at land surface or also is covered by thin layers of soil and
permeable sand. Dissolution of the limestone or dolomite is
most intensive where the water first contacts the rock surface.

WHAT ARE CENOTES?

Cenotes - are underground caves

in which the roof collapses
exposing the underground cave
water surface.
WHAT ARE BLUE HOLES?

Blue holes - are water filled

sinkholes located in the ocean
WHERE DO SINKHOLES OCCUR?

Sinkholes are commonly found in what geologists

call Karst Terrain. Karst terrain are regions where
the type of rock below the land surface can
naturally be dissolved by underground water
circulating through them. About 20% or our country
is underlain by Karst terrain
EFFECTS OF SINKHOLES

•Physical injuries

•Water contamination

• Loss of lives
WHAT WILL BE THE SOLUTIONS FOR
SINKHOLES?
•Check country offices, local or state geological surveys
•Redirecting or blocking source of water
•Avoid construction on wetlands
•Sea water treatment
•Recycling gray water run-offs
•Avoid human activities that can form sinkholes such as
old mines, leaky faucets, ground water pumping, aquifer
system, etc.
WHAT IS A GEOHAZARD MAP AND WHY IS IT USEFUL?

A geohazard map indicates areas that are

susceptible to floods and landslides, as determined by the
Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB). In a sunstar
article, former senator Juan Miguel Zubiri noted that the
geohazard maps should be used as guides by the Local
Government Units (LGU’s) on how they should plan their
municipalities. The construction of housing settlements
should be banned in high-risk areas as shown by the
geohazard maps.

He also noted that although typhoons and other

natural disasters may not be prevented or avoided, we
may mitigate the destruction if we use the information
and technology available to us
