-Taking Green Computing to Computer Lab

 In today’s world, organizations are constantly

searching for ways to conduct their operations
in an environmentally responsible manner.

 There are different risks and benefits to

organizations seeking to utilize green
computing.

 Our focus is on the hardware and infrastructure

needed for an organization to achieve cost
` and power savings.
 Computer Energy is often Wasteful

 Printing is often Wasteful

 Pollution
 Personal computers wastes up to 400 kilowatt-hours of

electricity a year by functioning at full power even though

it is not being used
 Power management is built into PC operating systems,

but users have additional choices, such as whether to

turn off computers when not in use.
 It minimizes the power consumption of the computer

without affecting the quantity and quality of the work

done.
 E-Mail can be considered “green” because it reduces
paper use when used to distribute documents
electronically.
 Helps in shrinking carbon footprints and costs.
 users have habit of taking even the printout of e-mails
 An application such as GreenPrint can help avoid
printing unwanted pages while also saving printer ink,
money, and trees.
 computers and associated products are
causing their own environmental concerns,
labeled under the term electronic waste, or
"e-waste”.
 Green Computing promote the recyclability
or biodegradability of defunct products and
factory waste.
WHY WE ADOPT GREEN COMPUTING IN COMPUTER LAB?

Financial Savings from Power Consumption

 Virtualization

 Power Supply

 Video Card

 Display
Virtualization: Duplicating hardware with software.
On a server or a desktop PC, it allows multiple operating
systems and multiple applications to run on a single
computer.

Effect of Virtualization:

255 Servers -> 22 Servers only

This has resulted in a saving of almost 50-70% of energy

can be saved from Virtualization
 A power supply is an internal hardware component that
supplies component hardware with power.

 A power supply converts a 110-115 or 220-230 volt alternating

current(AC) into a steady low-voltage direct current (DC).

 Power supplies include simplicity, reliability, low noise levels

and low cost.
A fast GPU may be the largest power consumer in a
computer.Energy efficient display option include:
No video card-use a shared terminal, shared thin client, or
desktop sharing software if display required.
Use motherboard video output-typically low 3d performance and
low power.
Reuse an older video card that uses little power, many do not
require heat sinks or fans. Select a GPU based on average
wattage or performance per watt.
Early days, we use Cathode ray tube(CRT) which consumes
high amount of electricity and also it gives heat.
LCD monitors use a cold-cathode fluorescent bulb to provide for
the display. Some newer displays use an array of LED instead of
Fluorescent bulbs.
Light emitting diodes(LEDS), which reduces the amount of
electricity used by the display.
LCD monitors uses three times less when active, and ten times
less energy when in sleep mode.
 The green technology doesn’t include green computing only but also focuses on the
components used in the computer.

 As, energy star is used nowadays focuses on the computer does not affect the
environment.

 Green computing represents a responsible way to address the issue of global warming.

 By adopting green computing practices, business leaders can contribute positively to

environmental stewardship and protect the environment while also reducing energy and
paper costs.

 Nowadays, every computer manufacturing company is focusing on the green IT concept.

 However, this reality does at least mean that a widespread mind set already exists for both
adapting to and paying money for new computer hardware on a regular basis.
