Introduction
• A cooling tower is a heat rejecting device.
• Reject waste heat to the environment.
• Uses air or water to cool the hot fluid.
• Cooling towers are able to lower the water temperatures
more than devices that use only air to reject heat.
• Cooling towers are a very important part of many chemical
plants, refrigeration system etc.
Working Principle
• The hot water from the tank is supplied into the cooling
tower with the help of water pump.
• The water is passed into the cooling tower through the pipe
and sprayed from the top of the cooling tower.
• As the water falls down it comes in contact with the natural
air which is entering into the cooling tower.
• When the water comes in contact with the air heat transfer
takes place between the hot water and the cold air.
Major Components

• COLLECTING TANK
• WATER PUMP
• TEMP MEASURING DEVICE
• NOZZLE
• FAN
 Water Pump
• A pump is a device that moves fluids by mechanical action
• Pumps can be classified into two major groups
1. Centrifugal pump
2. Reciprocating pump

Specification:
Power: 18W
Volt: 165-250 V
Speed : 660 Rpm
 Fan
• A fan is a machine used to create flow within a fluid.
• The fan consists of a rotating arrangement of blades which act on
the fluid.
• The rotating assembly of blades and hub is known as an impeller.
Specification:
Power: 180 W
Speed: 1400 rpm
Fan size: 15 inch
 Temperature Measuring Device

• Thermocouples are used for measuring the inlet air

temperature.
• Thermocouples are work on the seeback effect.
• Sling psychrometer is used to measure both the dry bulb
tempreture and wet bulb temperatures at time.
Thermocouple Sling psychrometer
 Nozzle

• A nozzle is a pipe or tube of varying cross sectional area.

• Nozzles are frequently used to control the rate of flow speed,
direction or pressure of the stream that emerges from them.
 Collecting Tank

• In this project two tanks are required

1. To collect the hot water coming from the plant
2. To collect the cold water coming from the tower

• Tanks are made up of galvanized steel

• Tanks provided are having capacity to hold water up to 100 liters.

Performance
These are measured parameters and then used to determine the
cooling tower performance in several ways.
• Range this is the difference between the cooling tower water
inlet and outlet temperature.
𝑪𝑻 𝑹𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒆 (°𝑪) = 𝑪𝑾 𝒊𝒏𝒍𝒆𝒕 𝒕𝒆𝒎𝒑 (°𝑪) − 𝑪𝑾 𝒐𝒖𝒕𝒍𝒆𝒕 𝒕𝒆𝒎𝒑 (°𝑪)

• Approach this is the difference between the cooling tower outlet

Coldwater temperature and ambient wet bulb temperature.
𝑪𝑻 𝑨𝒑𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒂𝒄𝒉 (°𝑪) = 𝑪𝑾 𝒐𝒖𝒕𝒍𝒆𝒕 𝒕𝒆𝒎𝒑 (°𝑪) − 𝑾𝒆𝒕 𝒃𝒖𝒍𝒃 𝒕𝒆𝒎𝒑 (°𝑪)
• Effectiveness this is the ratio between the range and the ideal
range.
• Cooling Capacity this is the heat rejected in kCal/hr or TR,
given as product of mass flow rate of water, specific heat and
temperature difference.
Advantage
• Recycling of waste water.
• Effective cooling of water is possible.
• Low construction cost.
• Operation cost is low.
• Easy to operate.
Disadvantages
• Sensitive to climate changes
• Only effective for large quantity of utility water
Application
• Power plant
• Petroleum refineries
• Food processing plants
• Chemical plants
• Refrigeration and chilling plants
Literature Review
1. B.K. Yadav & S. L. Soni: Has discussed about cooling tower is
used to reduce the temperature of hot water stream. It is
mainly used in air conditioning plants, chemical plants etc.
Evaporation loss and effectiveness are two important
performance parameters of cooling tower.

2. B.B. Sai, K.Srinivasa Rao: Has described a detailed methodology

of an Induced draft cooling tower of counter flow type in which
its efficiency, effectiveness, characteristics are calculated. The
technical data has been taken from a mechanical draft cooling
tower.
3. Ronak Shah, Trupti Rathod:The new cooling towers have
many desirable features, including pure water, low noise,
safety, energy effective and so on. The mathematical
models of the counter flow closed circuit cooling towers are
established in terms of mass and heat balance.
Performance curve of the cooling towers is drawn and it is
mainly calculated that the outlet temperature of cooling
water varies with the spray water flow rate. Results of the
theoretical calculation are found to be close to the
experimental data
Objective
• Fabrication of the cooling tower.
• Increase the rate of heat transfer by changing the baffle
material and arrangements.
• Compare experimental and analytical data of the energy
performance.
