What is Cohesion?

Why is it important for


writing to be cohesive?
What are some ways to make
one’s writing more Cohesive?
What is Cohesion? The flow of sentences
and paragraphs from one to another- tying
together old and new information.

Cohesive Devices- words and phrases like


conjunctions, synonyms, pronouns, and
transitional phrases.
A. Pronouns- substitute of noun.
ex: she, it, they, whichever
Ex: Lucy plays piano. Lucy is talented.
Pronouns as Adj.
ex: this, that, these, those
Ex: I love DT. DT offers many opportunities.
Pronouns which can be used as adjectives, along
with the articles such as “a” “an” or “the” with a
synonym.
Ex: Hong Kong is renowned for the deep
natural harbor of Hong Kong. Hong Kong’s
harbor enables ready access by international
cargo ships. Hong Kong is also known for
the Hong Kong skyline, with a very high
density of skyscrapers; Hong Kong boasts
the second largest number of skyscrapers of
any city in the world.
Correct: Hong Kong is renowned for its
deep harbor, which enables ready access by
international cargo ships, and its skyline,
with a very high density of skyscraper; the
territory boasts the second largest number
of high rises of any city in the world.

B. Transitional Devices/Result- those are


cohesive device that are use to what is the
outcome/result.
Ex: so, therefore, as a result, thus,
because, in addition, however.
Ex: a. They were angry because their plans
had been discovered.
b. The treasure is not mine, and
therefore I am willing to take it.
Ex: One of my favorite hobbies is travelling. I
decided to get a job that paid me to travel
because I just couldn’t afford my habit. I got a
job for a company called off-road where I led
bicycle trips. I got to spend two months living
and working in France’s wine country. I went
to the south and stood on the red carpet
where they hold the Cannes Film festival.
Riding bikes and travelling around France all
summer was great. The job was to much work
and not enough pay. While it fed my travelling
addiction, I knew that job wasn’t for me.

C. Chronological Sequencing-
Ex: in the beginning, and, then, finally,
first, second, third
Ex: Before I got lunch, I went shopping, and
then went to the movies.
Correct: I went shopping, then went to
the movies, and then got lunch.
Ex: To begin, writing well is a multi-step
process. First, a writer should brainstorm to
help generate ideas. Second, writing an outline
is important because it allows the writer
includes all the necessary information. After
outlining, the writer should create first draft of
his/her work. Then, he/she should get feedback
on the draft from a classmate. Another
possibility would be asking a teacher for
suggestions for improvement. Finally, after
several drafts, the writer will provide a final
version for submission.
D. Repetition of a key Term or Phrase-
different words that represent the same
idea.
Ex: The problem with the contemporary art
is that it is not easily understood by most
people. Contemporary art is deliberately
abstract, and that means it leaves the
viewer wondering what is she looking at.
E. Comparison- those are cohesive devices
that is used to compare
Ex: also, equally, similarly, likewise,
compared with.
Ex: a. Jane speaks French. Sam also speaks
French.
b. She is more attractive compared with
the small one.
F. Exemplification- those are cohesive devices
that is use to in illustrating/showing examples.
Ex: for example, for instance, to illustrate, such
as, namely.
Ex: a. Adjective is a word that modifies noun
or a pronoun such as beautiful and ugly.
b. I can play quite a few musical
instruments, for example, the flute, the guitar,
and the piano.
