Punctuation Marks

Directions: Read the sentences carefully.

What is a punctuation marks?

Any one of the marks (such as a period,


comma, exclamation point and question
mark) used to divide a piece of writing
into sentences or clauses.
Here’s the lists of common punctuation
marks in English.
 1. PERIOD (.)
 Most sentences end with a period, which signals a strong
pause.
Example:
Dave and Oscar went hiking in the woods yesterday.

2. QUESTION MARK (?)


The sentences are asking questions.
Example:
Why did their parents allow them to go?
3. EXCLAMATION POINT (!)
This mark ends a sentence expressing strong
feelings, or surprise.
Example:
I’m so excited to be on this hike!

4. COMMA
The comma, is used to separate words or group
of words in a sentence.
Example:
My older sister, Althea, is studying hard.
My sister had a pet cat. She loved to talk to
her cat and enjoyed playing with it everyday.
They were inseparable! Her cat’s name was
Missy.
One day, my sister went home from
school. She noticed that Missy did not
come to greet her. She panicked and started
to call Missy.
Missy, darling! Mommy is home! Missy,
where are you?
There was no response until my dad
told her that Missy was sick. My sister
brought Missy to the veterinarian.

ends with an exclamation point (!).
