"Listen to the reed, how it complains
and tells a tale of separation pains.
Ever since I was cut from the reed bed, my lament
has caused man and woman to moan.
I want a bosom torn my separation,
to explain the pain of longing.
Everyone who is far from his source
longs for the time of being united with it once
more."
- Jalal Al-Din Al-Rumi

SUFI MUSIC
Sufi Music

 It is a tool for the believer to get closer to God,

dissolving the physical realm into the spiritual one.

 A deep spiritual connection is established and the

Sufi releases all the worldly attachments, to be able
to dissolve into God's light and power. Sufi music is
easily qualified as "soul music" for Muslim mystics.
Sufi music in remembrance of god and
spreading the teachings of Muhammad
 When the Prophet Mohammad's revelations were heralded to the
world in the seventh century of the Christian era, the "message" could
not be confined to the Hejaz or the Arabian peninsula.

 Within three quarters of a century the banner of Islam’s Prophet

migrated eastward to ends of Transoxiana, southward to the banks of
the Indus river in India, northward to the shores of the Black Sea in
Asia Minor, and westward into Spain onto the Pyrenees. This was done
by practicing Sufi music and poetry of the likes of Rumi , Faiz , and
many more.

 At the emergence of Islam in Hejaz, spiritual newness dawned on

the world. The religion of Islam prospered, and nothing else mattered.
When Prophet Mohammad passed into greater glory year 632 A.D., his
Companions sought, like their holy Prophet, to keep the minds of men
only, away from the malahi or forbidden pleasures of old, including
wine, women, and song.
Sufi music segregation into Qwwali ,
Gazal and Kafi , Gnawa music
 Due to the increasing Muslim population
around the globe , Muslim culture started
spreading really fast through the most common
means ‘ music’.

 Teaching of Muhammad were told to people

by the means of music , which could be
understood and spread at a very fast rate.

 People started relating to it and different

forms of devotional music , with the same
purpose came to being.

QWWALI GAZAL KAFI

QWWALI
 Qwwali is one of the oldest forms of Sufi music. Qwwali was
originally performed in Sufi shrines or dargahs.

 The roots of Qawwali can be traced back to 8th century Persia

.During the first major migration from Persia, in the 11th century,
the musical tradition of  Sama (   ) migrated to South Asia, Turkey
and Uzbekistan.

 The poetry is implicitly understood to be spiritual in its meaning,

even though the lyrics can sometimes sound wildly secular, or outright
hedonistic. The central themes of Qawwali are love, devotion and
longing (of man for the Divine).

 Qwwali was sung as a celebration of God by Muslims.

 It was sung in marriages as it basically talks about mystical love and

togetherness.
GAZAL

 The Ghazal is a poetic form consisting of

rhyming couplets and a refrain, with each line sharing
the same meter. A Ghazal may be understood as a
poetic expression of both the pain of loss or separation
and the beauty of love in spite of that pain.

 The Ghazal spread into South Asia in the 12th

century under the influence of the new Islamic
Sultanate courts and Sufi mystics. Although the Ghazal
is most prominently a form of Persian and Urdu
poetry, today it is found in the poetry of many
languages.
 Ghazals were written by the Persian mystics and poets.
13 century : Jalal al-Din Muhammad Rumi

14 century : Hafez

16 century : the Azeri poet Fuzuli

1797 – 1869 : Mirza Ghalib

1877 – 1938 : Muhammad Iqbal

1749 – 1832 : Through the influence of Johann Wolfgang von

Goethe.

The Ghazal became very popular in Germany in the 19th century,

and the form was used extensively by Friedrich Rückert (1788–
1866) and August von Platen (1796–1835).
KHAFI

 Kafi is a classical form of Sufi poetry,

mostly
in Punjabi, Sindhi and Seraiki languages and

originating from the Punjab and Sindh regions
of the Indian subcontinent. Some well-known
Kafi poets are Baba Farid, Bulleh Shah.
 Some of the early notable exponents of this form
were in the 1930s, when classical singing became
highly popular

 Kafi was seen as one of the oldest forms of

classical music. It gained popularity because of the
growing age of classical singing.
Sufi trance , Sufi rock and Sufi
classic , etc.
`
 Sufi Trance singing has the original lyrics in
English as well as excerpts of Persian poetry by
poets like Rumi and Sohrab Sepehri in the Persian
language.

 Sufi rock is a genre of rock music that

emerged in the early 1990s and became widely
popular in the late 1990s in Southeast Asia. It is
the process of fusing conventional rock
music with Sufi music and imagery.

 Sufi classic is the poetic version of classic Sufi

texts into songs. Singers like Sona are well
known for the use of Sufi classic texts in there
songs.
 SUFI ROCK : The term “Sufi rock" was coined
in 1993 by writer Nadeem F. Paracha to define
the Pakistani band, Junoon who pioneered the
process of fusing conventional rock music with Sufi
music and imagery.

 It got widely accepted and became popular thus

giving rise to a new genre of music , Sufi rock .
SUFI TRANCE : singers like Haale mix trance
and Sufi music to get a whole new genre
SUFI TRANCE.

With the increase in trance culture , Persian

artists started mixing Sufi poetry to trance
elements . With the increase in trance
Sufi music was the devotional mystical
form of music , sung in the praise of
Allah..It began in Afghanistan..poets like
Amir Khusro , Rumi..began the Sufi
movement..and now in the modern times
the Sufi music is being mixed with various
other forms . It has gained a whole new
level and is being used and practiced
widely.
