Introduction To Statistics and Data Analysis

This chapter introduces key concepts in statistics including data, population, sample, types of data (qualitative, quantitative, discrete, continuous), and measures of location (mean, median, mode). It defines data as any observation that has been collected, and statistics as providing methods for design, description, and inference. It also defines population as the complete set of elements under study, and sample as a subset of the population.

Introduction to Statistics and

Data Analysis
Chapter 1
• Data: Any observation that has been collected
• Statistics: provides methods for design,
description and inference
• Population: The complete set of elements
under study
• Sample: A subset of population
Types of Data
• Qualitative: Non-numeric data
– Mathematical operations are meaningless
• Quantitative: Numeric Data
– Mathematical operations meaningful
Types of Quantitative Data
• Discrete Data: Countable or finite
• Continuous Data: Infinite number of possible
values
Measure of Location
• Sample Mean
– Numeric Average
Measure of Location
• Median
– Reflects the center tendency of a sample in such a
way that it is uninfluenced by extreme values
– Arrange the observations in a sample in increasing
order of magnitude
• Mode: The number with the highest
frequency, one that occurs maximum number
of times
