Light characteristics describe the color, frequency, and pattern of lights used to identify navigational aids like lighthouses, light vessels, buoys and sea marks. Different lights use different characteristics to allow mariners to identify which light they are seeing on a chart or in real life. Light travels in a straight line, as demonstrated by placing an opaque object in its path to cast a shadow. The law of reflection states that an incident light ray, the reflected ray, and the normal to the mirror surface all lie in the same plane, and the angle of reflection equals the angle of incidence as measured from the normal.

Characteristics of Light
A light characteristic is a graphic and text
description of a navigational light sequence or color displayed on a nautical chart or in a Light List with the chart symbol for a Lighthouse, light vessel, buoy or sea mark with a light on it. The graphic indicates how the real light may be identified when looking at its actual light output type or sequence. Different lights use different colors, frequencies and light patterns, so mariners can identify which light they are seeing. Nautical chart Lighthouse Light vessel Buoy Light travels in straight line In a dusty atmosphere it is sometimes possible to see light travelling and it does appear to be moving in a straight line. The fact that light travels can be demonstrated by putting an object in its path. If the object is opaque the result is a degree of blackness on the other side of it which is due to the absence of the light. The dark area is a shadow. Law of Reflection
The law of reflection governs the reflection of light-
rays off smooth conducting surfaces, such as polished metal or metal-coated glass mirrors. Consider a light- ray incident on a plane mirror, as shown in Fig. 56. The law of reflection states that the incident ray, the reflected ray, and the normal to the surface of the mirror all lie in the same plane. Furthermore, the angle of reflection is equal to the angle of incidence . Both angles are measured with respect to the normal to the mirror.
