MINISTRY OF

CHRIST
TO THE ELDERS AND THE FLOCK
1 PETER 5
PSALM 23
A psalm of David. your rod and your staff,
    they comfort me.

The LORD is my shepherd, I lack
nothing. You prepare a table before me

He makes me lie down in green     in the presence of my enemies.
pastures, You anoint my head with oil;
he leads me beside quiet waters,     my cup overflows.
6 Surely your goodness and love will follow

    he refreshes my soul.
me
He guides me along the right paths
all the days of my life,
    for his name’s sake.
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD

Even though I walk
    forever.
    through the darkest valley,[a]
I will fear no evil,
    for you are with me;
I. WILLING SERVANT
2 Be shepherds of God’s flock that is
under your care, watching over them—
not because you must, but because you
are willing, as God wants you to be; not
pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to
serve; 3 not lording it over those
entrusted to you, but being examples to
A. REQUIREMENT VS. WILLINGNESS

X Tradition/Routine/ Thirst and hunger

Compliance for God
X Peer Out of the
Pressure/Force abundance of the
heart
“Every time I go to church or
any gathering for God, my
heart’s prayer is to encounter
God.”
Quite Time with the
Lord
A MATTER OF FAITH
“Maybe the difference lies on how
we came first to the Lord. Was it by
addition or submission? It seems to
me that a lot of people just added
Jesus in their life but that is just not
it. You cannot add Jesus in your life.
You must submit your life to Him.
B. GAIN VS. EAGERNESS
Above all else, guard your heart, for
everything you do flows from it. (Proverbs
4:23)
For where your treasure is, there your

heart will be also. (Matthew 6:21)

X Seek Attention Heart’s desire and
passion
X Become Famous Out of reverence
and obedience
X Profit Out of love to God
C. IMPOSING VS. EXEMPLARY

“Lead not by force but by

example.”
II. HUMILITY BEFORE GOD

In the same way, you who are younger, submit

yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe
yourselves with humility toward one another,
because,
“God opposes the proud but shows favor to the
humble.”[a] 6 Humble yourselves, therefore,
under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you
up in due time.
A. SUBMISSION TO AUTHORITY

Slaves, in reverent fear of God submit

yourselves to your masters, not only to
those who are good and considerate, but
also to those who are harsh. 19 For it is
commendable if someone bears up under
the pain of unjust suffering because they
are conscious of God. (1 Peter 2:18-19)
B. UNSWERVING FAITH
6 But when you ask, you must believe
and not doubt, because the one who
doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown
and tossed by the wind. (James 1:6)
C. CAST ALL YOUR CARES

“Those who leave everything in

God’s hands will eventually see
God’s hands in everything.”
III. STEADFAST FAITH
Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around
like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him,
standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of
believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of
sufferings.
10 And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in
Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore
you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.
A. RESISTING THE DEVIL

“I am
victorious.”
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his
mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so
that you can take your stand against the devil’s
schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh
and blood, but against the rulers, against the
authorities, against the powers of this dark world
and against the spiritual forces of evil in the
heavenly realms. (Ephesians 6:10-12)
13 No temptation[a] has overtaken you except
what is common to mankind. And God is
faithful; he will not let you be tempted[b] beyond
what you can bear. But when you are tempted, [c
] he will also provide a way out so that you can

endure it. (1 Corinthians 10:13)

B. RESTORATION FROM GOD
He will wipe every tear from their eyes.
There will be no more death' or mourning
or crying or pain, for the old order of
things has passed away. (Revelations
21:4)
C. ENCOURAGEMENT FROM ONE
ANOTHER
The way of a fool is right in his own eyes,
but a wise man is he who listens to
counsel. (Proverbs 12:15)

Better is open rebuke than hidden love.
(Proverbs 27:5 )
