ISSUES AND
CHALLENGES
BIOMETRICS

Biometrics comprises of methods for uniquely recognising

humans, based upon one or more intrinsic physical or
behavioural traits. So, in Information Technology,
biometrics are used as a form of identity access
management and access control
How does biometric authentication work?

• Biometric information is captured and stored .

• Stored data is detected and compared with the
information stored at the time of enrolment.
Commonly used biometrics:

1.Hand geometry

2.Iris

3.Face

4.Voice

5.Fingerprints
FINGERPRINTS
WHAT IS A FINGERPRINT
SENSOR?

A fingerprint sensor is a type of technology

that identifies and authenticates the
fingerprints of an individual, in order to grant
or deny access to a system.
HOW DOES A FINGERPRINT SENSOR
WORKS?

Stores the unique ridge pattern of fingertips.

Captured images of human fingerprint are enriched to make it

functional, and then a biometric template is produced .

The template is matched against the existing scans.

Types of attacks
1. Fake biometrics:
• Fingerprints known to system
• Fingerprints unknown to system
• Severed known fingerprints
• Genetic clone of known fingerprints
• Artificial clone of known fingerprints
• Printed image of known fingerprints
2. Replay attack

3. Override matcher
Future scope
This technology is getting better day by
day and spreading globally at a faster
rate.
In recent times, biometrics based on
brain (electroencephalogram) and heart
(electrocardiogram) signals are being
emerged.
We hope for much such advancement
Conclusion
We think that with the improvement of the actual techniques, it will
become one of the standards in the authentication methods in a
close future.
Nevertheless, without a control by some laws, it would be a mess.
Biometrics is the tomorrow authentication’s method, but a lot of
work has to be done on both technical and ethical sides.
