A Case of Primary

Osteoarthritis of
the Knee with TKA

Patient is a 79-year-old male with a history of

Clinical osteoarthritis of the right knee. The patient was


seen by the physician for a right TKA, or total

Received in formalin labeled with the patient's
name, medical record number and designated
"right femoral head" are multiple portions
measuring 1.8 x 1.2 x 1 cm up to 8.2 x 5.2 x 2
cm and 9.5 x 7.5 x 4 cm in aggregate.  The
Gross bone is tan with two areas of eburnation
measuring 2.5 x 1.5 and 2.9 x 1.8 cm.  The
Description marrow is yellow-tan and unremarkable.

Histologic

Green pen indicates area of thickened
hyaline cartilage with tidemark which is
a histologic feature of osteoarthritis and
suggests changes brought about by
degenerative joint disease.
After histologic review of representative
sections of areas of eburnation, Dr. Belyaeva
Final determined that the patient displayed
Diagnosis degenerative changes in the bone, specifically
degenerative joint disease, without the
presence of osteomyelitis.
