What is Covid 19?
• Respiratory disease which is highly contagious & fateful ; caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome
Corona virus 2 ( SARS-CoV-2 )
• Symptoms
1. Fever
2. Cough
3. Shortness of Breath
4. Breathing Difficulties
5. Some people shows other non respiratory symptoms or No symptoms at all
The Survival of the Virus
• In Air – 3 hrs.
• Cardboard- 3 hrs.
• Copper – 24 hrs.
• Un-tarnished iron – 2 days.
• Plastics – 5 days.
• Paper – 4 to 5 days.
• Wood – 4 days.
• Glass – 4 days.
• Aluminum - 2 to 8 days.
Danger of changing the tools ad equipment frequently between
workers. The need to disinfect them if the tool and equipment is
changed between workers .

Workplace Readiness
1. Evaluate the level of risk associated with the workplace
• Interaction between public, CBO Members, staff and co-workers
• Individuals having sicknesses like diabetes, etc. who is having high risk of infection
• Individuals with recent international travel history
• Risk involved with non occupational factors ( Due to home condition, community related)
2. Implementation of a suitable focal point to monitor and control activities implemented against COVID – 19
spared. The details of Focal Point to be announced.
3. Availability of a special isolation room preferably with attached bathroom / toilet at the workplace to be
utilized if met with any suspected case. Facilities needs to be available for the disinfection of the room.
4. Inform the relevant RDHS, MOH, DS, PHI and GN, in advance, before commencing site operations.
5. Arrange the PHI to inspect the work site and the offices/dormitories etc. and obtain his approval before
commencing site operations.

1. Those having fever with or without cough, runny nose, sore throat and/or shortness of breath
2. Who have contact with suspected or confirmed case within last 14 days
If anyone enters the workplace with above conditions, should immediately sent back home

According to the GOSL guidelines published on 17th April 2020 on restarting work.
1. Anyone entering the premises (both visitors and staff) should wash their hands with soap before entering.
(Foot operated tap would be the best for wash basin)
2. A hand rubbing alcohol (minimum 70% v/v Alcohol) can also be used.
4. Need to remove shoes at the entrance or a foot bath with 0.1% Sodium Hypochlorite solution needs to be
used.
5. Check the temperature of everyone who enters the premises with the medical grade thermal scanner.
6. If the temperature is above 98.40F or 370C, personal needs to be held about 10/15 minutes and needs to
recheck temperature after resting. If the result is same, they will not be allowed to enter the premises.
7. Keep a distance of 1m between staff at all times. (While working, meetings, Canteen, Dormitory etc)

9. Need to refrain from touching the mask or face while wearing the mask.
10. After using masks need to be discarded to a paddle operated closed bin and hands need to be washed.
11. Avoid sharing common office equipment. ( Ex. Printers, Fax machines, Telephones, Pen drives, desks, etc)
12. If anyone need to share anything those must be disinfected by cleaning with soap or alcohol.
13. Direct verbal communication between co-workers need to be avoided. Instead encourage them to use public
address systems, intercoms, etc.
2. All metal surfaces should be disinfecting with minimum 70% v/v alcohol solution.
3. All nonmetallic surfaces should disinfect with 0.1% sodium hypochlorite solution.
4. The doorknobs and handles should disinfect before every shift and every three hours afterwards.
5. Floors, office equipment and furniture shall be cleaned with disinfectant a minimum of twice a day.
6. The construction site, its machines, equipment, tools, stocks of material have to be regularly disinfected
using a disinfectant.

4. Meals should be provided at site to avoid workers going out of premises for the food.

Staff and Labor Accommodations
• Provide accommodation for less number of people (maximum 25) to prevent contamination to others if somebody get
contaminated.
• 1 m gap between beds / sleeping locations and 1 bed per person
• Parties, intoxication in groups shall be prohibited / restricted / limited
• Use of common glassware, cutleries shall be prohibited
• No visitors shall be entertained to use accommodation
• Construction workers shall not get together after finishing the day’s work for discussions, group games, to consume food,
water or alcohol.
• Each construction worker shall keep separately a plate, water bottle glass/cup, tooth paste, tooth brush, razor of their own
and shall not use these in common.
• Used hankies, paper tissues, disposable razors, tooth brushes, shall be disposed in a pedal operated closable garbage bin
or be buried.
• Construction workers shall not touch each other, hand shake, hug etc., during this period under observation.
• Each construction worker shall keep separately his clothes, suits, towels, shoes, overalls, etc. and must not borrow these
of each other.
• Construction workers shall not go out of construction site once reported to work in the morning and before completing
work at the end of the day without due permission of the supervisor.
• In order to maintain the body immune system healthy, Construction workers shall consume a nutritious and balanced diet
and take a good rest after work and a good sleep.
• Construction workers shall avoid crowds, avoid visiting public places as much as possible, during the outbreak under
observation.

Transport of workers
1. Vehicles should be cleaned and disinfected (Seats, all handles, interior door panel, windows, locks, exterior door
handles, poles, etc) before transport passengers.
3. A dedicated officer needs to be allocated to open and close the doors and passengers should avoid opening and
closing doors.

• Remove shoes / slippers and leave the outside. Wash them before taking inside or wearing them again.
• Leave all your belongings outside. If any of them need to taken inside the house, disinfect them before
taking inside. (Ex. Mobile phone, wristwatch)

1. While on cleaning duty the staff must wear appropriate protective gear.
2. They should wash or sanitize their hands after each encounter. (Ex. After cleaning each room)
3. After each cleaning session all clothes and utensils need to be washed and disinfected and dried in hot
sun more than 30 mins.

Management responsibility
1. Providing of personal protection equipment based on the situation.
2. Assure only the utilization of fixed term employees and avoid temporary hires.
3. Improve ventilation in the workplace. If air conditioners are not used leave the doors and windows open.
6. If any in person meeting need to be conducted, plan everything, make everything available and assure
maintain social distancing.
7. Educate the staff about the situation and actions need to be taken and avoid. Conduct programs with the
help of PHIs. Display posters and signs with help from Sri Lanka Red Cross etc.
8. To engage unskilled labour and other available grades of workers from the surrounding areas in
consultation with CBO/CSO.
