Alcohol Part 1

This document discusses alcohols. It begins by stating the learning objectives, which are to define alcohols, identify their functional group, name the first four alcohols, draw structural formulas of propanol and butanol isomers, and describe industrial production and laboratory preparation of ethanol. The general formula of alcohols is given as CnH2n+1OH. Methanol, ethanol, propanol, and butanol are listed along with their molecular formulas. Structural formulas are drawn for methanol and examples of propanol and butanol isomers. The IUPAC system for naming alcohol isomers is also explained. The industrial production of ethanol through reaction of ethylene, steam,

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. State the general formula of alcohols.
2. Identify the functional group of alcohols.
3. List the names and molecular formulae of the
first four alcohols.
4. Draw the structural formulae of isomers of
propanol and butanol.
5. Name the isomers of propanol and butanol using
the IUPAC nomenclature.
6. Describe the industrial production of ethanol.
7. Describe the preparation of ethanol in the
laboratory.

Name of alcohols
 According to IUPAC Nomenclature
1. Identify the longest carbon chain with the
functional group – OH .
2. Replace the e from the parent name of alkane
with ol.
3. Number the carbon in the longest chain
beginning from the end nearest to the – OH
group.
4. For branched alcohol, determine the alkyl
group and the position of the branch.
