F
Symbolic Interactionism

It refers to a key framework of

sociological theory which depends on
the symbolic meaning developed by
people in the process of interaction.
Symbolic Interactionism

People change based on their

interactions with objects, events,
ideas, and other people, and they
assign meaning to things in order to
decide how to act.
M
Symbolic interactionism, for Blumer, has 3 basic premises:

1. Humans act
toward things on X
the basis of the
meanings that
things have for T
them

Symbolic Interactionism

• Interactionism is a social
action approach that states X
people have control over
their actions and that people
interpret different situations

meanings.

Symbolic Interactionism

• Interactionism claims that

individuals can exert control X

Symbolic Interactionism

• Interactionists look at society on a

micro (small) scale They study

how people behave in small scale
situations. They are interested in

Contradicting theories

Blumers view of human conduct contrasts

strongly with structural theories such as X
Functionalism. Socialization and social
control ensure that individuals conform to
society's norms and perform their roles in T

fixed and predictable ways.

F
Criticisms

● It neglects the macro level of social interpretation or the

“big picture.” In other words, symbolic interactionists
may miss the larger issues of society by focusing too
closely on the trees" rather than the "forest". The
perspective also receives criticism for slighting the
influence of social forces and institutions on individual
interactions.
Criticisms

● Symbolic interaction theory is very effective in

understanding behavior of individuals that are of the
same culture of the investigator. However, there is
criticism that a symbol specific theory cannot be used
cross-culturally. The meanings of symbols, behaviors, or
roles may differ between cultures and therefore cannot be
generalized to the whole of the population.
