 They are the largest source of hazardous waste.

 Main ethical issue is the “Environmental Pollution”.
 River / water Pollution  By dumping waste into the river.
 Soil/ Land pollution  Chemical ingredients contaminate the
soil.
 Employee/ Workers health issue  Working with toxic
elements.
 Poor working environment  No ventilation even the light
rarely comes within wall crack. Bad smell is another reason.
ALTERNATIVE SCENERIOS
There are many alternative rules and regulation or guidelines by

BTA,BFLLFEA,LFMEAB have fixed for tannery industries. If these are
properly followed then environmental ethical issues will be improved. Rules
and regulations falls under;
Chemical Management.
Technology management.
Awareness of external and internal environment of industry.
Quality control and standard operating management.
Hazaribagh tannery relocation.

ANALYSIS
Who are the stakeholders?

Stakeholders are those who are directly or indirectly
affected by any business.
Internal Stakeholders  Investors, Managers, Employees,

Owners many more.
External Stakeholders  Government, Customers,

Suppliers, Local Neighborhood, society, creditors, etc.
ASSESSING THE ALTERNATIVES
Teleological Perspective
In Greek the word telos means goal, end and logos is science.
Teleology is result based ethics. Teleology
supports the end of an action. It concentrates on the outcome of an
action rather than the action itself.
Tannery industry falls under consequentialist view of teleological

ethics. One is egoism and the other is utilitarianism. Tannery
industry have to decide whether they want to maximize their profit
and follow egoism or they want to benefit maximum people by
following utilitarianism.
ASSESSING THE ALTERNATIVES
Deontological Perspective
Deontology came from the Greek work “Does”. If the
action is right or wrong it will decide is it ethical or not.
Doesn’t care about the consequences.
At this aspect, “First Alternative scenario” which is “Strict
regulations and obligations” better than Second Scenario
(Punishment and fines).
RECOMMENDATIONS
 Relocation of the industries from Hazaribagh area to Savar or other region which are located
far from the city.
 The workers should be wearing goggles , safety boots and gloves while working.
 They should be given training on how to operate the work while using chemical by taking
precautions and necessity steps.
 Well-equipped laboratory and proper infrastructure with good transportation system should be
established .
 Introducing solid waste management system, a salt treatment facility, Chromium separator,
water refinery system and an industrial friendly estate.
 Introducing CETP (The central effluent treatment plant ) at the industrial zone.
PRACTICAL CONSTRAINTS
Poor working environment.

Lack of skilled and trained workers.
Environmental pollution.
Health risk of the employees.
Lack of latest technology.
Difficulty in importing expensive materials and chemicals.
CONCLUSION
Leather industry is one of the biggest industries in Bangladesh but it is not that much
efficient. If we can increase the number of exports by rearranging some factors, then
we can also become more efficient. Right now we don’t have access to better
technologies and necessary raw materials. The working environment is also not up to
the mark. Environment is being polluted by the chemical wastages of our tannery
industries. We have to work hard to make this negative sides disappear. For that we
have to work really hard. We have to increase the quality of our products up to the
standard. By doing these we can make our leather industry one of the most largest and
efficient industries.
