Points To Ponder

Chronological age is not always indicative of physiological age or organ system functioning, as the rate of aging varies between individuals and organ systems. In general, those over 85 show the greatest effects of aging, as reserve capacity decreases in all organ systems. As people age, their body systems have more difficulty maintaining homeostasis when under stress or illness, and it takes longer for systems to return to equilibrium. Older adults also often have multiple chronic illnesses requiring several medications, increasing the risk of adverse drug interactions. Symptoms of illness can be non-specific in older people and mistaken for normal aging, and responses to disease may be slower or lower level. Pain perception also tends to decrease with age.

POINTS TO PONDER

MRS. JOJI B. CASTELLANO,R.N.,MAN

Chronological age is not a good
indicator of physiological age or of
organ system functioning.

The rate of age change varies among

people & among organ systems in each
person.
As a rule, the client who is 85 years or
older is expected to show the greatest
accumulation of age-related change.

There is a decrease in the reserve

capacity in all organ systems with
aging.
Body systems have greater difficulty
maintain homeostasis when they
undergo illness or social or
psychological stresses.

The organ systems require a longer

time to respond to the stress & return
to a state of equilibrium.
In addition to physiological changes
in most organ systems older clients are
to experience multiple chronic
illnesses that require several drugs for
treatment thereby increasing the risks
of adverse effects of drug interactions.
Symptoms of illnesses of older adults
are often non-specific & easily ignored
because of the general belief that the
symptoms result from the normal
aging process.
Age alters the response to disease by
causing a slower & lower level of
response, for example, there is often
little if any temperature rises with
infection.

Pain perception is usually decreased &

therefore its protective function is lost.
