GIO PONTI

 Giovanni "Gio" Ponti (18 November 1891 – 16


September 1979) was an Italian architect,
industrial designer, furniture designer, artist,
and publisher.
 He did military service during world war I in
the Pontonier Corps with the rank of
captain, from 1916 to 1918.
 Ponti graduated with a degree in
Architecture in 1921 from the Politecnico di
Milano University.

 in 1950 won the commission to design the
House on Via Randaccio in Bouilhet villa in Garches,
32-story Pirelli Tower in collaboration with Milan,1925 Paris,1926.

In 1952 he went into partnership with the architect Alberto Rosselli (Studio
Ponti-Fornaroli-Rosselli, (1952–1976)
After the death of Rosselli he continued to work with his longtime partner

Antonio Fornaroli .
 From 1953 to 1957, he built the Hotel della Città et de la Ville and the Centro

Studi Fondazione Livio e Maria Garzant .


As the Pirelli Tower attracted more attention, international commissions came

into Ponti's office for Caracas, Venezuela, ( Villa Planchart), Baghdad, Hong
Kong, Eindhoven and the 1971 Denver Art Museum, and finally a series of
Milanese churches.
Between 1960 and 1962 Ponti designed and realize the first Italian Hotel Pirelli Tower
Design: the Parco dei Principi (Sorrento).

From 1953
 “Art is a treasure, and these thin but jealous walls defend it”.
 He was not a member of any mordernist ideological movements.
 Architecture as a place where multiple aspects of creative act come
together and “style’’ as a recurrent recognisable element present in
the community of a given society at a given time.
 Ponti never viewed architecture as simply creating buildings
Instead, he often conceived of the building’s interior as well,
creating furniture(chairs and coffee table) , lighting appliances, and
even items like ceramics, glasswares etc.

 He sought a meeting point between expressiveness and
uniformity ,creating his many domuses on via Letizia and typical
homes in via de tognuu and via del varavaggio.

Superleggera chair for Cassina.
 Worked as the Faculty of Architecture in Milan
from 1936 to 1961.
AWARDS
 In 1934 he was given the title of "Commander" of the
Royal Order of Vasa in Stockholm. He also obtained
the Accademia d'Italia Art Prize for his artistic
merits, as well as a gold medal from the Paris
Académie d'Architecture.

OTHER WORKS
 Finally, he obtained an honorary Doctorate from the
London Royal College of Art.
