Science of Life
LESSON 1: THE SCIENCE OF LIFE
BY: MARY JANE COMIA PALOMARES
At the end of this lesson you should be able
to:

•Identify the components

of a scientific
investigation.
WEEK 1 Lessons Scientific Investigations

THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD

• Scientists investigate the natural and the
physical world through experiments and
observations.

• The SCIENTIFIC METHOD is a logical and

orderly procedure of investigation leading to
the discovery of facts and the relationships
that exists between facts.

from a brown can. I
also smell something.
WEEK 1 Lessons Scientific Investigations

FORM A HYPOTHESIS

• A hypothesis is a testable idea or explanation that

leads to scientific investigation.

• An “educated guess” to answer the problem

• A proposed answer to your question

• Hypotheses must be carefully constructed so they

can be tested in a practical and meaningful way.

• Many hypotheses use the “if/then” statements.

WEEK 1 Lessons Scientific Investigations

PERFORM AN EXPERIMENT
 Scientists investigate the natural world
through experiments and observations.

 An experiment is an organized procedure to

study something under controlled
conditions.

 A set up to observe how some things

happen or to test your hypothesis

 To test the hypothesis, this includes

variables (quantity that is changed during
the experiment or being measured)
•Ways to state an alternative hypothesis:
• In formulating hypothesis there are two accepted formats
which are:
• “I think…because…” or “If…then…because…”
• Example:
• I think metal easily gets hot than the wood because
metal is considered as good conductor of heat.
Example of a Hypothesis

 If you drop a rock and a feather, (then) they will fall at

the same rate.
 Plants need sunlight in order to live. (if sunlight, then
life)
 Eating sugar gives you energy. (if sugar, then energy)
WEEK 1 Lessons Scientific Investigations

Observe, Collect, And Record Data

 Data is information gathered by observation or
experimentation that can be used in calculating or reasoning.

 Data are collected from the experiment

 Organize the data and perform calculations.
 Interpret the data that you gathered from your experiment.
 During their investigations, scientists record all their
observations, setup, and procedures, so that they will not
forget anything.
WEEK 1 Lessons Scientific Investigations

DRAW CONCLUSION

•A summary of the result.

•The answer to your question

• Scientists draw conclusions about

whether the data support the
investigation’s hypothesis.
What if the conclusion
doesn't support the
hypothesis?

or Question Observe,

WEEK 1 Lessons Scientific Investigations

QUESTION:
• If an investigation does not support a
hypothesis, is it still useful?

• YES! The information from the investigation

can help scientists form a better hypothesis.

• Scientists may go through many cycles of

testing and analysis before they arrive at a
hypothesis that is supported.

Life Lessons
How are scientific methods used?

• Even you or anybody can use the steps

in scientific method to answer many
questions in everyday life. If you
observed something and have a
question, you can apply the scientific
method to answer it.
