Intent:
Understanding Centre line method technique
Centre Line Method
In centre line method overall dimensions are worked out on the Basis of Centre
lines of the plan.

Q Q
• The total centre line length is multiplied with the breath and depth of respective item
to get the total quantity in cum. Q= l X b x h
• At the corners of the building where two walls are meeting, no subtraction or
addition is required. P=Q
• At each junction (when three walls meet at a place) half breadth of the respective
item is to be deducted from the total centre length. l= CL-2*(b/2)
Example: Estimate the quantity of brick work in super structure in given plan.

Type A

Type B

For different section of walls in a building, the centre line length for each
type shall be worked out separately.
In such cases, no deduction of any kind need be made for A type walls, but when
B type walls are taken, for each junction deduction of half breadth of A type walls
(main Walls) shall have to be made from the total center length of B type walls.
Example: Estimate the quantity of excavation in given plan.

A B C
CL for Main Wall =1(A-C)+2(A-C)

Depth earthwork in excavation =3.33*0.75*0.75= 1.87
Type B 750 mm wide & 750 mm Total Quantity= 17.13+1.87= 19 cum

Numerical
Estimate the quantities of the Brick work and DPC of a two
roomed building from the given plan and section:

230mm Thick Wall D = Door = 1000 X 2000

Clear height of room =3.0 M W= Window = 1200 X 1500
