Quadrilaterals:

A Parade of Four-Sided Polygons

Quadrilaterals
A quadrilateral is a four-sided
polygon with four angles.
There are many kinds of
quadrilaterals.
The five most common types
are the parallelogram,
the rectangle, the square,
the trapezoid, and
the rhombus.
Types of Quadrilaterals
Quadrilaterals
There are many different types of
quadrilaterals. We identify
quadrilaterals using their sides and
angles.

Side Angle
Let’s Review…
All polygons are made up of line segments
and angles. The line segments that create
quadrilaterals will be parallel,
perpendicular, OR intersecting.
The adjacent sides of
this quadrilateral
are perpendicular.

The adjacent sides of

this quadrilateral
The opposite sides are intersecting.
of this quadrilateral
are parallel.
Let’s Review…
The angles that make up polygons will be
right angles, acute angles, or obtuse
angles.
The angle that makes The angle that
up this vertex of this makes up the vertex
quadrilateral is acute. of this quadrilateral
is obtuse.

The angle that makes

up this vertex of this
quadrilateral is right.
Special quadrilaterals
parallelograms
One special kind of polygons is
called a parallelogram. It is a
quadrilateral where both pairs of
opposite sides are parallel.
Properties of parallelograms
 It has 2 pairs of parallel sides
 Opposite sides are congruent.
 Opposite angles are congruent.
Properties of parallelograms
 Consecutive angles are
supplementary.
 The diagonals of a
parallelogram bisect each other

Rectangles
A rectangle is a quadrilateral that
has two pairs of parallel sides that
are equal and four right angles.
PROPERTIES OF Rectangles
All the properties of a parallelogram
apply:
 opposite sides are parallel
 opposite sides are congruent
 opposite angles are congruent
 opposite angles are supplementary
 diagonals bisect each other
PROPERTIES OF Rectangles
Now, let's look at the properties that
make rectangles a special type of
parallelogram.
(1) All four angles of a rectangle are
right angles.
(2) The diagonals of a rectangle are
congruent.

Rhombuses
A rhombus is a quadrilateral that has
four equal sides and two pairs of parallel
sides.
A rhombus is a type
of parallelogram,
and what
distinguishes its
shape is that all
four of its sides
are congruent.
PROPERTIES OF Rhombuses
 The sides of a rhombus are all
congruent (the same length.)
 Opposite angles of a rhombus are
congruent (the same size and
measure.)
 The diagonals of a rhombus bisect
each other.  This means that they cut
each other in half.
PROPERTIES OF Rhombuses
 The intersection of the diagonals of a
rhombus form 90 degree (right) angles.
This means that they are perpendicular.
 Adjacent angles (ones next to each other)
of a rhombus are supplementary.  This
means that their measures add up to 180
degrees.

length of
side TP and
side TQ?
Squares
A square is a quadrilateral that has four
equal sides and four right angles.

This square has four right

angles and all four sides are
congruent (the same length).
How many pairs or sets of
parallel sides do you see?
Properties of Squares
 The diagonals of a
square bisect each
other and meet at
90°
 The diagonals of a
square bisect its
angles.
 Opposite sides of a
square are
both parallel and
equal in length.
Properties of Squares
 All four angles of
a square are equal.
 All four sides of a
square are equal.
 The diagonals of a
square are equal.
Trapezoids
If we have a quadrilateral where one pair
and only one pair of sides are parallel then we
have what is called a trapezoid. The parallel
sides are called bases while the nonparallel
sides are called legs. If the legs are congruent
we have what is called an isosceles trapezoid.
PROPERTIES OF Trapezoids
 The bases are parallel by
definition.
 Each lower base angle is
supplementary to the upper base
angle on the same side.
PROPERTIES OF ISOSCELES Trapezoids
 The properties of trapezoid apply by
definition (parallel bases).
 The legs are congruent by
definition.
 The lower base angles are congruent.
PROPERTIES OF ISOSCELES Trapezoids
 The upper base angles are congruent.
 Any lower base angle is
supplementary to any upper base
angle.
 The diagonals are congruent.
KITE
A kite is
a quadrilateral
whose four sides
can be grouped
into two pairs of
equal-length
sides that are
adjacent to each
other.
Properties of a KITE
 There are two sets of adjacent sides (next
to each other) that are the same length
(congruent.)
 There is one set of congruent angles.
These are opposite of each other and are
between sides that are different lengths.
Properties of a KITE
The intersection of the diagonals of a
kite form 90 degree (right) angles.
This means that they are
perpendicular.
The longer diagonal of a kite bisects
the shorter one.  This means that the
longer diagonal cuts the shorter one in
half.
