    1. An encoder converts an input positional code to an output binary code. A decoder converts an input binary code to an output positional code and only activates one of its outputs at a time. 2. A multiplexer is a device that selects one of several input lines and outputs the data on it based on the address lines. A demultiplexer is the opposite device that takes a single input and routes it to one of several output lines based on the address. 3. Encoders and decoders perform the opposite conversion operations from each other. Encoders convert from positional to binary codes while decoders convert from binary to positional codes.
