MATERIAL BALANCES
May be written in the following way :

INPUT + GENERATION – OUTPUT – CONSUMPTION = ACCUMULATION

Enters through Produced Leave through Consumed Buildup within

system within system system within system system
boundaries boundaries

AZAS TEKNIK KIMIA 2 – TKK1319 7

SIMPLIFIED RULE
If the balanced substances is a NONREACTIVE SPECIES (neither a reactant nor a
product), set GENERATION = 0 and CONSUMPTION = 0
If a system is at STEADY STATE, set ACCUMULATION = 0

GENERAL PROCEDURE FOR
MATERIAL BALANCE
CALCULATION
1. Baca soal dengan seksama

aljabar

GENERAL PROCEDURE FOR
MATERIAL BALANCE
CALCULATION
7. Rumuskan apa yang harus dihitung/diselesaikan

9. Penyelesaian

BALANCES ON MULTIPLE
UNIT PROCESSES
In real chemical industries, more than one unit processes exist such as a separation
unit after reactor and so on
Need to know term called SYSTEM in order to solve material problem
SYSTEM – any portion of process that can be enclosed within a hypothetical box (or
boundary), it can be the entire process, an interconnected of process unit, a single
unit, a point which two or more stream come together into one stream
The inputs and outputs to a system are the process streams that are INTERSECT to
the system boundary
Solving material balances in multiple unit processes is basically the same as single
unit process

EXAMPLE 1

EXAMPLE 2
Ethyl
  ether is made by the
dehydration of ethyl alcohol in
the presence of sulfuric acid at
140oC:

If single pass conversion of the

alcohol is 87% and mass of
sulfuric acid in waste stream is
twice as mass of sulfuric acid in
dilute stream, calculate :
 Kg/h fresh feed
 Kg/h waste
 Kg/h recycle
 Kg/h Dilute H2SO4

EXAMPLE 3
A natural gas contains 95 mol% CH4 and the balance C2H6. This fresh feed natural
gas 500 kg/hr is to be burned with 25% excess air based on the complete combustion
of natural gas. The single pass conversion of methane is 80% and C2H6 is 95%, the
remainder recycled. The natural gas is recycled as shown in Figure 2. Calculate the
kg/hr of natural gas recycled, kg/h of products and kg/h of air?
Mr air = 29 g/mol; Ar S = 32 g/mol

EXAMPLE 3
A natural gas contains 95 mol% CH4 and the balance C2H6. This fresh feed natural
gas 500 m3/hr at 70oC and 150 kPa is to be burned with 25% excess air based on the
complete combustion of natural gas. The single pass conversion of methane is 80%
and C2H6 is 95%, the remainder recycled. The natural gas is recycled as shown in
Figure 2. Calculate the m3/hr of natural gas recycled at 70oC and 100 kPa per m3/hr
of air at STP!
