Nokia Router OAM

Field Operations and Management of Nokia Routers as regards to Airtel Nigeria Implementation

Prepared by Akingbade Babatunde

Presented by Quadir Zakariyah

Overview

• The aim of this material is to intimate field engineers with the tools,
credentials and commands to perform basic troubleshooting task in the
event of Management Plane loss to a Network Element.
Models of Installed Nokia Routers /Switches

• 7210 SAS-K12
• 7705 SAR-Ax
• 7705-SAR8 v2
• 7210 SAS-Mxp
• 7750-SRa4
• 7750-SR7
Node Management

• There are two types of management when it comes to router

• Out-of-band
• In systems management, out-of-band management involves the use of management interfaces (or serial ports)
for managing a network equipment.
• In-band
• An in-band management involves managing devices through the common protocols such as telnet or SSH, using
the network itself as a media. It is a common way that provides identity based access controls for better security.

• For the purpose of this training we will focus on out-of-band management which involves
the use of console cables or a RJ45 cable.
Node Management [Forms]

• Console Port (out-of-band Management)

• Every Nokia Router /Switch has a console port also known as serial management on its front side. Console Port is used to
connect a computer directly to a router or switch and manage the router or switch since there is no display device for a
router or switch .

• Management Port (out-of -band Management)

• The management port is a physical port which can be assigned an IP either via DHCP or static for out-of-band management
of the Router or Switch.

• Management Plane (in-band Management)

• In computer networking, the management plane of a networking device is the element of a system that configures,
monitors, and provides management, monitoring and configuration services to, all layers of the network stack and other
parts of the system.
Cable Types Required for Out of Band Logon

• RJ45 Ethernet cable (Management Port)

• Ethernet to DB9 cable (Standard Serial/Console Cable)
• DB9 to DB9 cable (Used for SAR8 routers)
• USB to RS232 DB9 serial adapter (e.g Prolific)
Node Management [out-of-band MGT Port]

• Managing a router using the management port involves connecting an Ethernet cable to your PC and the
port labeled mgmt. or management on the router /Switch.
• Once connection is made the IP address of 192.168.0.2 Mask of 255.255.255.252 should be assigned to your
computer Ethernet port.
• After which you can test connectivity to the Node by opening command prompt and running the ping
192.168.0.1.
• 192.168.0.1 is configured on most of the Nokia Nodes for out-of-band management on the Airtel Network.
• On successful ping open your terminal application (putty, Teraterm), click on ssh enter 192.168.0.1 and click
open to start the session.
Node Management [Console]

• In the event the management port fails the console port is the primary form of managing
Network Nodes.
• This requires a Console Cable for the device type to be managed and a USB to Serial cable
with its drivers properly installed on the PC.
• Once physical connection is confirmed the PC assigns a COM port to the serial connection
which can be checked but opening device manager on your PC.
• If COM port is for example COM3 open your terminal application (putty, Teraterm), click on
serial enter COM3 and speed 115200 for Nokia Nodes and click open to start the session.
Software Required for out-of-band
Management and Remote Support

• AnyDesk
• This is remote support application which can be use to support operations by Back
Office Engineers in the event the management plane fails to a node.
• Simple run a google seach download and install.

• TeraTerm
• This a terminal application used to login to CLI based nodes.
• It has the ability to auto detect COM ports used by (Serial) connected to the PC.
