UNIT I: NAMES AND

OCCUPATIONS.

LESSON #1 GRAMMAR:
VERB BE, SINGULAR STATEMENTS.
• It is used to talk about names, ages, feelings, nationalities and
occupations in the present tense.

• How to? (Affirmative statements)  Subject + Verb Be + Complement.

• Articles: a/an  they come before a common noun, in this case


occupations.

• Singular Subjects: I, You, He, She.


• Verb be: am, are, is.

• He and She are followed by is.


• I is followed by am.
• You is followed by are.
Contractions: I am  I’m
He is  He’s
She is  She’s
You are  You’re
• Affirmative Examples:

I am Alejandro. OR I’m Alejandro.


You are an engineer. OR You’re an engineer.
He is venezuelan. OR He’s venezuelan.
She is a teacher. OR She’s a teacher.
Mike is venezuelan. OR Mike’s Venezuelan.
Maria is a teacher. OR Maria’s a teacher.

• How to? (Negative statements)  Subject + Verb be + not +


complement.

• Negative Examples:

I am not Elvis. OR I’m not Elvis.


You are not a teacher. OR You’re not a teacher.
He is not american. OR He’s not american.
She is not a singer. OR She’s not a singer.
Michael is not an actor. OR Michael’s not an actor.
Martha is not an architect. OR Martha’s not an architect.
LESSON #2 GRAMMAR:
VERB BE, SINGULAR & PLURAL NOUNS.
• In this case, we’re going to learn how to use the verb be with plural
nouns.
• Plural nouns are: We, You, They.
• These nouns are followed by the verb be are.
• Contractions: We are  We’re
You are  You’re
They are  They’re

• In this case, articles «a/an» are NOT used.

• Examples (Negative and Affirmative)


We are lawyers. OR We’re lawyers.  We add «s» to the common noun.
They are not flight attendants. OR They’re not flight attendants.
You are students. Or You’re students.
Angel and Andres are brothers.
Jhonny and you are not singers.
Vannessa, Veronica and Me are teachers.
LESSON #2 GRAMMAR: VERB BE,
YES/NO QUESTIONS AND SHORT
ANSWERS
• This Verb Be form is used to make question about professions, ages,
names and etc.

• How to? (Question Form) Verb be + Subject + Complement + ?

Example: Are you Peter? Yes, I am. OR No, I’m not.


DO NOT SAY  Yes, I’m  THIS IS WRONG

Other Examples:

Is she Maria? Yes, She is. OR No, She’s not.


Are they musicians? Yes, They are. OR No, They’re not.
Is Jhonny an engineer? Yes, He is. OR No, He’s not.
Is Maria a singer? Yes, She is. OR No, She’s not.
Are Peter and John pilots? Yes, They are. OR No, They’re not.
