The Swedish Stuga
The Swedish Stuga
The Swedish Stuga
BACKGROUND
History of seeking consensus when making decisions, belief that decisions should be
made for common good
People are very independent within a strong social welfare system
Most people do not marry or attend church
Very strong in the sciences, which fits with very rational/practical approach to things
Sweden is a social democracy, which means they mix a strong social welfare system
combined with capitalism
Neutral in times of war
THE SWEDISH SUMMER HOME
(STUGA)
Small wooden house painted red-brown, with white windows and doors
Very basic, often with an outhouse
Point is to commune with nature
Wandering/exploring nature is very important. There are few fences and no signs
about trespassing
Cultural values it represents: love of nature and tradition, individualism through self-
development, equality
LOVE OF NATURE AND
TRADITION
Transition away from farming is fairly recent (in the 1900s), so people still feel very
connected to nature and the agrarian past
Theory is that emphasis on nature comes from long history of battling the elements
People widely backpack, hike, camp, fish, pick berries, etc.
INDIVIDUALISM THROUGH
SELF-DEVELOPMENT
Extreme self-reliance, avoid relationships outside of family; many live alone
Stuga provides solitude and quiet individualism, time for reflection and introspection
Individualism is for personal development (horizontal individualism), where in the
US individualism is more competitive (vertical individualism)
The social safety net is important, but Swedes don’t invest in personal relationships
much; much work in society is done through participation in organizations
Individual isolation is really important
EQUALITY
People are allowed to camp, walk, ski, or canoe almost anywhere
Different notion of equality (as evidenced through income-based fines)
Playing golf is common
Most Swedes consider themselves middle class
Following Hofstede, Sweden is very feminine (i.e. dominant values emphasize
relationships among people, concern for others, and overall quality of life)
Things are changing over time, with industrialization and immigration
