Rishabh Jaiswal - AD Project

The document provides details about a sustainable housing project called Govardhan Eco Village located 100km from Mumbai in a rural area. It was developed by Chitra K. Vishwanath Architects to be an eco-friendly retreat for devotees. The project utilized local resources and integrated ecological principles like water harvesting. It was designed with buildings on high ground for cross ventilation and large shared spaces. The constraints of the remote location, water and energy access required self-sufficiency. Traditional construction techniques using local materials like mud bricks and stone were employed.

Govardhan Eco Village

• Govardhan Eco Village (GEV) is a humble attempt to

highlight the importance of living in harmony with nature.
The aim is to create aesthetical and comfortable structures
for the residents and guests, while not breaking the
harmony with nature and the immediate surroundings.
• The purpose behind this Govardhan eco-village is two fold
1. To present a sustainable community model
2. To educate people in the field of traditional sciences
including Yoga, spirituality, Cow Protection & Ayurveda..
• To bring the members closer together for the purpose of
teaching a simpler and more natural way of life.

Analysis Of Project
The site is located 100 kms north of
Mumbai, in a rural area at the foot
hills of the Sahyadris, and lies
between the hill Kohoj Gad and the
river Vaitarna. The site is undulating
with prominent ridges and valleys.
Agriculture, primarily paddy was
grown in the valley areas. The valleys
with black cotton soil also formed the
drainage for the rainwater. The higher
lands had groves, mostly of Teak and
Toon, most of which had been
harvested by the previous owners of
the land before handing over the land
to the buyers. These higher land
patches also had the best wind
conditions micro-climatically.
The project was to develop a retreat for
the devotees of ISKCON,Girgaum
Chowpatty  Mumbai. The brief included,
other than accommodation to develop
seminar, prayer, wellness, dining facilities
and a Gaushala for hundred cows. The
buildings are built on High ground where
they receive better breeze and are
designed to be only one bay deep to allow
for cross ventilation. Large semi-covered
spaces provide for comfortable daytime
use.

Govardhan Ecovillage is not an overnight

establishment, but shape formed over a
century of toil, hardship and the constant
passion of many. Govardhan Ecovillage is
a place that houses several eco-friendly
initiatives. Govardhan Ecovillage is
implementing several rural development
initiatives in many villages nearby with
the help of Sri Chaitanya Seva Trust.
CONSTRAINTS
1. Location – The site is away from any manufacturing base or
skill base, with Mumbai being the closest 100 kms away. All
major materials other than steel and cement had to come
from Mumbai including skilled labour. It was thus important
to reduce this transfer of materials and also impart skills to
the locals so as to reduce both economic and ecological
costs .
2. Water- Other than rains which provided for agriculture, all
domestic and animal husbandry depended on groundwater
for sustenance. It was important that groundwater
management be integrated into the planning exercise from
the onset of planning activities.
3. Energy- As is common knowledge rural India suffers from
both quality and quantity of electricity which made it
imperative that the future habitation is self-sufficient in its
needs of future.
These constraints are thus becoming the marker for carrying
capacity of the land and it is on the basis of availability of these
resources the total occupancy is going to be determined.
Construction techniques
• The walls are composite of mud bricks on the
outside and Fly ash bricks on the inside with
Timber planks.
•  The exterior bricks walls blends with the mud and
dry reigion near to which the building is located
and hence rooted to it's surroundings whereas
the inner fly provide a feel of warmth due ton
insulation provided of its cavity and shelter of
timer supports to maintain its temperature.

Town Plan
Hornbill house
• This holiday chalet by Bangalore firm
biome environmental solutions and
nestles into a hillside overlooking a tea
and coffee plantation in southern India.
• Hornbill house shelters below a tree in the
grounds of the o'land plantation in
Nilgiris, a district of Tamil nidus.

Clint aspect
We suggested that these bungalows be
located over the expanse of the property rather
than a close knit development.
Analysis Of Project
•  Located at o'land estate, a tea and coffee plantation.
• The hornbill house is located on an old drying yard sitting
on the edge of a water fall.
•  The house opens onto the views of this water fall, a valley
with a backdrop of layers of mountains in different hues of
blue of the sky, and green of the tea gardens,
• Thereby integrating each of these views strategically
from a different direction from within the house.
• All the rooms have predominant view of one of these
features, while having a glimpse of the rest.
Design idea
• The idea was to provide privacy to the guests and
a new and varied experience to a returning guest.
• The estate already had motor-able roads and
usable footpaths within and therefore these were
used to reach the different locations with ease.
• Thus the building sites were chosen based on the
views, easy access to a road or footpath, and
terrain.
Construction techniques
• The walls are composite, of stone on the
outside and mud bricks on the inside. External wall stone

•  The exterior stone walls blends with the rock

face near to which the building is located and
hence rooted to it's surroundings whereas the
inner mud walls provide a feel of warmth and
shelter.

Construction techniques
• The striking roof of the villa invokes a sense of Roof profile
flight that one feels while gazing at the views of
the valley and hills from within the building.
• An arrow-shaped roof gives the structure an
aerodynamic appearance and shelters a small
terrace in front of the master bedroom.
