    The Philippines was a Spanish colony for over 300 years. During this time, the Spanish imposed policies that discouraged economic development and kept the Filipino people in a state of poverty and ignorance. The Spanish focused on converting Filipinos to Catholicism but did little to establish schools or teach new technologies and skills. As a result, when the Philippines gained independence a century from now, it will have a long road ahead to develop its economy and society after being held back for so long under Spanish rule.
