Statement of Need
Due to COVID-19, almost all the non-governmental organization (NGO) has had
to cancel their major fundraising events as well as programs and services, which
leads them facing a serious financial impact. Therefore, I would like to use this
opportunity to raise funds for one of the non-governmental animal organization
in Klang Valley so that it helps them to operate safely and smoothly during this
difficult time.

Target Group:
M y targeted group was those individuals
who do not support government funding
of animal shelters and also those
communities from the social media,
friends and family. I played a role to
convince them with the evidence that they
should consider the long term effects that
these shelters have on the animals and the
shelters themselves.

Activities
This Co-curriculum program was aimed to build a Fundraising plan and create
animal shelter awareness during COVID-19 outbreak. Covid-19 has brought many
changes to everyday life, but one thing remains the same, animals in our
community need help. Malaysians have rushed to the aid of Zoo Negara amid its
financial woes; the national zoo is not the only casualty of the Covid-19 pandemic
(Daim, 2020). Animal welfare groups, which have been relying on public and
corporate donations to keep their operations afloat, have also been hard hit by the
effects of the Movement Control Order and lockdowns, and are seeking support
from Malaysians (Daim,2020).
Stray animals still need a place to go, the animals in the shelter still need food,
medical care, and new homes. Also, the volunteer animal foster parents still need
support from the organization. Also, as we have seen during this time of economic
hardship, pet owners are often forced to surrender their beloved pets when their
financial distress exceeds their ability to afford the cost of caring for them. Shelters
and rescue groups then struggle to absorb that cost (Hussein, 2020).

Activities
According to the president of the animal welfare organization Persatuan Haiwan
Terbiar Malaysia (SAFM), R Kalaivanan, the number of stray animals in Malaysia
has increased by about 70% during the pandemic. He also mentioned that each
organization, which operates only in West Malaysia, needs RM5, 000 every month
to sustain. The money is used for food, medicine, vaccination, deworming and
neutering as well as to provide milk formula for abandoned puppies and kittens
(Hisamudin,A.H,2020)
Pawtarian cares for all animals in need. They made their mission to help support
those in need animals as much as they can by provide capacity building support
organizational that the organization could take the lead in humanely managing the
local stray animal populations. Also, providing good food for a healthy, happy life
and improve the adoption rates as well as move stray animals out of the shelter and
into responsible homes.
Hence, I hope to help the organization to support animal shelters, rescues and as
well as to prepare and respond to the crisis and future needs related to the
pandemic, fundraising plus help to spread education on animal shelter awareness to
the community through the online platform “Facebook”.

Since every Malaysian is undergoing movement control orders and social distancing
currently, online platform became the greatest tool to raise the funds and share the
awareness. Creative ways were created and developed in order to create awareness on
animal shelter, as well as for the fundraising, such as advertising in social media and
peer to peer fundraising. Ideas such as advertising in social media such as “Facebook”
about the Pawtarian organization has been viewed by thousands and even have reached
more people for donation. Advertising with the use of sad commercials about animals
was created to serve to be a hook in the intro in order to capture the reader’s attention
for awareness and fundraising. This also increased more base of support.
I have had some of my friends and family members to start volunteering in their
own ways as well. One of my friends knits blankets for the foster animals, and
another friend become a foster parent. My brother in law volunteers his time in
the dog adoption program that organized by Pawtarian organization, bought
their Pawtarian T-shirt and even adopted a dog from the shelter. I have also
contributed my part by purchasing their Pawtarian organization’s T-shirt and
directly donate Rm50 to their organization.
