What is Modernism?
Art Movements and Styles

What is MODERNISM?
Modernism refers to the rejection of ideals
and principles of the classical tradition in favor
of the experimental forms of expression that
characterized many styles of art and literature
from the 1860s to the 1970s.
Modernism

Why is Modernism referred to as “avant-

garde”?
Art Movements and Styles

Modernism is also referred to as avant-garde

– to approaches that are ahead of their time.
“Modern” suggests, in general, an approach
that overturns the past, and by that definition,
every era of artists doing something
completely new must be considered modern.
Modernism

Does Modernism refer to ONE style?

Art Movements and Styles

Modernism was never one style.

Rather, it serves as an umbrella term that encompasses
the many artistic visions that flourished throughout this
period, from Impressionism and Post-Impressionism to all
the schools that sprang up across the decades and
through the 1970s – Fauvism, Cubism, Futurism,
Expressionism, Surrealism, Abstract Expresssionism, etc.
Modernism

Give examples of artworks that can be

considered as "avant-garde" or “modern art”.

Modernism
Modern art and Modernism are surely linked, but we use
the terms differently.
Modernism is a concept of artmaking built on the urge to
depict contemporary life and events rather than history
Modernism was a response to industrialization,
urbanization, and the growth of capitalism and democracy.
Modernism
Modernism embraced art as a vehicle for exploring the
inner emotions of artists and their response to their times .
It also challenged the relationship between art and the
representation of reality.

Modernism

Although Abstraction and Modernism

frequently went hand in hand. However,
modernism is a much more inclusive term in
that it surmises the relevance of the broader
context of the creation of a work of art.
