    Course Contents
     Study of codes and specifications relating to design of structures.
     Introduction to steel as a structural material, hot rolled, cold formed
    and built up sections. Objectives of designers and selection of design
    criteria.
     Introduction to various methods of design. Strength analysis and design
    of simple tension, compression and flexural members with working
    stress method.
     Design of riveted, bolted and welded connections for tension members.
    LRFD method of design, Factor of safety, loads and load combination.
    Concept of load and resistance factors, plastic design and limits of
    design.
     Design of laterally supported and unsupported beams, design of beams
    for unsymmetrical bending.
     Design of supports for large sign boards. Design of bearing plates.
     Design and analysis of axially loaded columns, design of laced columns, analysis
    and design of eccentrically loaded columns. Length effects and evaluation of
    effective length factor for columns in braced and unbraced frames.
     Types of high strength bolts and rivets. Friction and bearing type connections.
     Fasteners subjected to eccentric loads. Continuous beam to beam and beam to
    column connections.
     Introduction to design of industrial frame works, crane and gantry girders.
    Differentload conditions and lateral bracing. Beam columns and axial flexural
    interaction, second order effects and moment magnification.
     Analysis and design of tension members, calculation of net area. Lacing and stay
     plates. Residual stresses, local and overall stability, Euler ‟s buckling load in
    columns.
     Design of plate girders.
     Plate girder proportioning and stiffener design including drawings. Design and
     drawing of a roof truss, purlin, roof sheet end bearing plate. Uplift of truss due to
    wind.

    • In steel structures, structural steel is the main
    load carrying material to transfer the load within
    them and to transfer load to the ground
    • Ex: - I-Beam, Tee section, [ - Channel section,
    Steel plate etc..,
    • Steel concrete composite structures are also used
    in high-rise buildings but we are only going to
    study about steel structures in this paper
