Spanish is the language spoken in Cartagena, but it is different from that of the
northern Latin countries and Spain, as the people of Cartagena "eat the words."
That is, some letters of the alphabet are not pronounced and thus the "coastal"
language is created, at least on the Caribbean coast. People from the central zone of
the country speak Spanish that is easier to understand.

Colonial Cartagena
Cartagena has squares, cobblestone streets and very colorful colonial buildings. Its climate
is tropical and the city is a popular destination due to its beaches. Baru Island, with its

The walled city
The walls around the city were built at the end of the 16th century, for the defense of the
city. Its construction began on September 8th 1614, after the attack of the legendary Sir
Francis Drake, and by order of King Felipe III. ... while this fortress was being built, the
city experienced constant pirate invasions.

Castle Saint Felipe de Barajas
The construction of the castle began in the year 1536 and was completed in 1657. It
was built in order to be able to more easily observe the continuous invasions and
attacks that the city suffered on behalf of English and French pirate armies, and to
be able to defend thenselves from them.

Historical Center
There are very valuable and important monumental constructions such as the Bank
of the Republic, the School of Fine Arts, the University of Cartagena, the Mayor's
Office, the Bolívar Sectional of SENA and the old headquarters of the Governorate
of Bolívar. The designs of the facades, the internal courtyards, the halls, the arches,
the windows, stairs, floors, high walls and balconies, look very well preserved.

The hill of the stern
The hill of the stern is a good place to appreciate the Heroic City from afar, with a beautiful view
that covers the Caribbean Sea, The Tierra Bomba Island, the tourist sector, the walled center, La
Boquilla, the north zone and the city in general. On the hill of the stern, visible from anywhere in
the city, stands majestically the Convent of the stern, built in colonial times.
