 Introduce digitization system in libraries to facilitate

Introduction:

The Punjab Public Library, Lahore, was

established by Lord Aitchison, Lt. Governor

of the Punjab, in 1884 in the glorious building

of Baradari Wazir Khan.

Baradari Wazir Khan was built by the Mughal
Governor Lahore, Aleem-ud-Din, known
as Wazir Khan, in 1641 A.D. Its covered area
is 5625 sq. ft. It is being used as open
reading rooms for current newspapers
and personal reading material. The Wazir Khan Baradari has the
status of Protected Building under the Antiquities Act 1975.

• QAL was established on 25th December, 1984 under Punjab
Government Educational and Training Institutions ordinance
1960.
• Research and Reference library. Catering the need of research
scholars and graduate students.
• Non Lending Library.
• It is an autonomous body run by the Board of Governors under
Archives and Libraries Wing, S&GAD, Govt. of the Punjab.

Total area of this monumental building is 33000 sq ft.
After the extension (construction two basement halls, English Hall
and Urdu Hall) the area has been increased to 70,000 sq ft.
Classical architecture building constructed in the mid 19th century
during the British Rule (Lawrence Hall 1863 and Montgomery Hall
1866)
The building was previously known as Gymkhana.

Collection of books at QAL is around 148,000.

 The Public Libraries were separated from HED
and became a wing of S&GAD in 2013.

 Its first ADP was formulated in FY 2012-13.


Its ADP has always been very meager thus the
Current ADP 2020-21 and the coming ADP
2021-22 are very vital and inevitable for the
uplift and rejuvenation of public libraries in
Punjab

 At present public libraries are working with
almost 50% recruited staff. Almost 50%
regular seats are vacant due to complete ban
on recruitment for the past many years. In
this regard, the Department has moved a
summary through proper channel for the
relaxation of ban for recruitment in various
grades.
