01 ❑ The Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao was an autonomous region of the
Philippines, located in the Mindanao island group of the Philippines, that consisted of five
02 predominantly Muslim provinces: Basilan (except Isabela City), Lanao del
Sur, Maguindanao, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi. It was the only region that had its own
government. The region's de facto seat of government was Cotabato City, although

this self-governing city was outside its jurisdiction.

01 Apuh Ambalang Ausalin (born March 4, 1943) is a


Filipino master weaver from the city of Lamitan, Basilan.
02 Apuh Ambalang is renowned for her mastery of the crafts
of sinaluan and sputangan, two of the most intricately
designed textiles of the indigenous Yakan community. She

learned weaving through her mother, who was previously
reputed to be the best weaver in Basilan and first practiced
04 the craft by using coconut strips.

It is said that their typical physical characteristics are strikingly different when compared to the

wear colorful, handwoven clothes.
