CLAUSES

C
 A sentence is a group of words that makes complete sense. It can consist of both phrases and clauses.

Examples :

Types of Clauses

Independent Clause (main clause/principal Dependent Clause

Joining of Sentences
 Two or more Independent Clauses

Method 1: Independent clause + semi colon (;) + Independent clause


Eg: Jane put a new washer in the bathroom; the tap didn’t work as expected.

Method 2: Independent clause + comma (,) + co ordinating conjunction (FANBOYS) + Independent

Eg: Jane put a new washer in the bathroom, but the tap didn’t work as expected

 Dependent and Independent Clause

Method 1: Independent clause + dependent clause (including the conjunction)


Independent clause

Eg: Jason is tired because he slept only for two hours last night.

dependent clause, including the conjunction

Method 2: Dependent clause (including the conjunction) + comma (,) + independent clause
Eg: As Jason slept only for two hours last night, he is tired.
Note: If Dependent Clause comes after the Independent Clause use a comma if the conjunctions are
contrasting – although/though/whereas/ even though

Eg: The teacher said that my project could have been better, although she did appreciate my research
work.
Ex.1 Identify each of the clauses as independent (IC) or dependent (DC):

Ex 2. Determine whether the underlined word groups, are dependent clauses, independent clauses or not a
clause.

1. Although it was pouring outside, John went out to meet his friends.

2. Rita goes out for a jog, whenever she needs inspiration.

3. After the war, the family moved to the countryside.

4. While eating ice cream, Ram noticed an injured squirrel.

5. I thought that the offer was too good to be true.

6. When vou are done watching T.V, please make your bed.

7. After Seema completed her work, she went out for a walk.

8. Tom left early today since he had to go to his child's school.

9. Before going on the stage, Ruma decided to do meditation.


Ex 3- Underline the subordinate/dependent clause in the following sentences.

1. As he was not there, I could not speak to him.

2. I waited for him until he came.

3. We eat so that we may live.

4. I don't know whether he is innocent.

5. It was raining, so I took out the umbrella

6. The life of a mosquito is very brief, but it is very active.

7. Jane likes painting, but I prefer clay modelling.

8. As you are unwell, you should not go to school.

9. After she picks nme up, Mom is taking me to buy shoes.


Ex 4 Join the following Independent Clauses using coordinating conjunctions.

1.The beach is a lot of fun. The mountains are better.

2. A group of us went to watch a movie. We agreed it was enjoyable.

3. I went to the store. I forgot to bring my shopping list.

4. He went to the theme park. He went on all the rides

5. I really wanted potato soup. The café only served clam chowder

6. Today is Thursday. The test is on Friday.

7. She had just bought two gorgeous dresses. She needed to get matching shoes.

8. I really want to see the game. The mall is having a huge sale today.

9. She interviewed for three jobs. She really wants to work here.

10. We all looked very tired. We had stayed up all night cramming for the finals.
Ex5- Combine the following independent clauses and dependent clauses to make meaningful sentences.

1. IC - I smiled. DC - Because the girl laughed.

2. IC - A bee stung me. DC - When I picked a flower for you.

3. IC - She will take us to the park today. DC - If my mom is happy.

4. IC - I was sent home from the airport. DC - Because I forgot my passport.


Ex6. Choose the appropriate clause from the box to make meaningful sentences. Identify if the clauses you have
used are independent or dependent clause. (Do not forget to add the correct punctuation marks where necessary)

although it rained a lot, when Ronnie gets here , while shopping at Reliance Fresh, she is a successful
administrator , but she usually shops at Foodworld
