WESTERN
SAMAR
o The name "Samar" was derived from the
local language samad, meaning "wound"
or "cut“.
o Capital: Catbalogan
o Their languages are Waray-Waray,
Cebuano, Boholano and Tagalog.
o Fishing and Agriculture are the major
economic activities in the province.
o Almost 95 percent of the total households
population of the province of Samar are
Filipino citizens. The rest are Chinese,
Americans and other foreign nationals.
LUZ C. PONFERRADA

o Luz Ponferrada is a Filipino politician.


o She is currently serving as mayor of
Basey, a municipality of Samar Province
 in the Eastern Visayas Region,
Philippines.
o She is the first ever lady Mayor of Basey.
SARAKIKI-HADANG
FESTIVAL

o Celebrated in Calbayog City, Western


Samar during the primary seven day
stretch of September.
o They offer local chicken as penances to
adore the spirits.
o It's best described as the movements of a
rooster as it tries to court a hen or
challenge another rooster to a fight.
o Hadang on the other hand is an olden day
ritual done by locals as a tribute to the
gods.
NATIVE DELICACIES

o Kinilaw is a pretty Filipino-native


popular dish.
o Baduya nga Pasayan is Samar’s answer
to Japanese tempura.
o Calbayog’s version of pancit comes with
the typical noodles, vegetables, seafood,
and pork.
o Samar’s tamalos is distinctly spicy and
nutty.
o Torta is a buttery pound cake baked in
pans with scalloped edges.
TOURIST
DESTINATIONS

o Sohoton Cave and Natural Bridge


derives its name from the Cebuano word
so-oton which means to pass through a
small opening. This cave has a high
cathedral-like dome with an entrance of
parabolic arch.
o San Juanico Bridge connects the islands
of Leyte and Samar by linking the city of
Tacloban to the town of Santa Rita,
Samar. It passes over the San Juanico
Strait. The road infrastructure is the
longest bridge in the Philippines spanning
across a body of water
SOUTHERN
LEYTE
o Maasin City is the capital of the province.
Southern Leyte was once part of Leyte
province before it was made into a
separate province.
o The province is well known for its quality
abaca products and is the country's major
producer of abaca fiber.
o The main language is Cebuano.
o The major industries are agriculture,
fishery and handicraft making.
o The main agricultural products are copra,
abaca fibre, banana, rice, corn, fruits,
vegetable and poultry meat.
IMELDA UY-TAN

o Imelda Uy Tan is a Filipino politician. She


is currently serving as mayor of Sogod, a
municipality of Southern Leyte Province
in Eastern Visayas.
o With a total of 17,612 votes, Imelda Uy-
Tan retains her position as the municipal
mayor of Sogod.
SANGGUTAN
FESTIVAL

o The Sanggutan Festival is one of the


famous Leyte festivals and events that
both tourists and locals also love.
o It is held in Barugo, a municipality of
Leyte, and is celebrated every May 18.
o The Sanggutan Festival gives importance
on the old coconut wine processing that
was used in Barugo.
NATIVE DELICACIES

o Binagol is made from Glutinous rice,


kalamay or brown sugar, and taro pudding
with nuts.
o Suman Latik is a sweet Filipino snack
made from rice dish and caramel sauce.
o Tres Marias is one of the unique Leyte
delicacies due to its ingredients.
o Chocolate Moron is one of the easiest
Native delicacies to prepare in the
province.
o Bocarillos is the Southern Leyte's version
of Bucayo.
TOURIST
DESTINATIONS

o Tangkaan Beach is not just a place of


relaxation and enjoyment. It is also a
place of history. The name Tangkaan is
from the word “tangka” which means
to attempt.
o Limasawa Island is famous as it is
believed to be the site of the first mass in
Philippine soil, officiated on Easter
Sunday of March 31, 1521.
