1. What is syntax?

In linguistics, the word syntax comes from the Greek


which is a combination of the word syn which means
“together”, and the word taxis means “sequence”.

So syntax is the part of linguistics that study the


structure and formation of sentence. It explains how
words and phrases are arranged to form coherent
sentence.
2. There are two parts of a sentence that are very important in
analyzing syntax, namely phrase and clause

 A clause is a group of words that consist of a subject and a


verb.
Example:
1. He laughed.
2. The guests arrived.
 A phrase is a group of words that does not consist of a
subject and a verb.
Example: on the table, under the tree, on the roof.
3. Phrases are divided into several types

1. Noun phrases (a noun phrases consists of or includes the following: noun


(person, place, thing), and modifier (determiner, adjective, participle)).
Example: A beautiful girl, a funny youtuber
2. Verb phrases (is collection of several verbs, so it can be a combination of the
following elements: auxiliary verb, main verb). Example: had cleaned, must
wash
3. Adjective phrases (adjective phrases is a phrase consisting of things like the
following: adjective, modifier, determiner, intensifier).
Example: a dark room, a sweet apple
4. Adverb phrases (adverb phrases is built around the adverb by adding word
before or after it). Example: very slowly, as fast as possible
5. Prepositional phrase ( prepositional phrases are types of phrases consisting
of prepositions and objects and functions as an adverb).
Example: in the noon, at room, between you and me
4. Clause is divided into two types

1. Independent clause
2. Dependent clause
Example:
 He order something when he need
He order something= independent clause
When he need= dependent clause
 She has talk to her mother who she missed so much
She has talk to her mother= independent clause
Who she miss so much= dependent clause
5. What is a sentence

The traditional or common sense definition states


that a sentence is a group of words that expresses a
thought.
The grammatical definition of the sentence is the
largest unit to which syntactic rules can apply. In
terms of syntactic categories, most sentence can be
divided into a subject and a predicate.
6. Types of sentences

 A simple sentence contains at least one subject and one


predicate. Example: john reads a magazine
 A compound sentence is two or more simple sentence
joined into a single sentence. Example: John read a
magazine and Mary read biology book
 A complex sentence is a sentence that contains an
independent clause and one or more dependent clauses.
Example: Studying before the test is good, if you want to
pass.
