WHAT ARE BIOACTIVE PEPTIDES?
 Biologically active or bioactive peptides are unique amino acid sequences
found encrypted in food proteins, that can have additional physiological
health benefits beyond their basic nutritional value

 These peptides are typically between 2 and 30 amino acids in

length and have hormone-like properties

 Bioactive peptides are inactive within the parent proteins, but can
be released through fermentation or hydrolysis
 They are known for their profound physiological functionalities like anti-
microbial, anti-diabaetic, anti-hypertensive, hypercholesterolemic,
immunomodulatory etc,.
SOURCES OF BIOACTIVE PEPTIDES

 Bioactive peptides can be obtained

from a variety of sources including
microbes, plants and animals, as
they play a major role in
metabolism.
 Despite the main source being
food products, some of them are
derived from plants and animals.
BENEFIT OF BIOACTIVE PEPTIDES
BIOACTIVE PEPTIDE PRODUCTION
DIARY PRODUCTS AS SOURCES OF BIOACTIVE PEPTIDE

 Milk and milk products play an important role in human

nutrition and health status
 Milk contains several bioactive components inherently,
whereas several others are produced when milk is subjected
to processing (fermentation etc.) and specific treatment
conditions.
 Several milk components, namely lactose, fat, protein (casein
and whey protein) and minerals serve as the parent
molecules for nutraceuticals.
GENERATION OF MILK-DERIVED BIOACTIVE PEPTIDES
AND THEIR PHYSIOLOGICAL FUNCTIONALITIES
CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM
 The cardiovascular system consists of the heart,
blood vessels, and the approximately 5 liters of
blood that the blood vessels transport.
 Responsible for transporting oxygen, nutrients,
hormones, and cellular waste products throughout
the body
 Cardio- heart Vascular- vessels

 From this, we may simply put that, Cardiovascular

health refers to the state of wellness or well-being
of the heart and blood vessels
CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH RISK FACTORS
 Cardiac failure can be caused by
cardiovascular issues such as;
 heart attack,
 coronary artery disease (damage to
the inside of the blood vessels of
the heart)
 hypertension (high blood pressure)
 Diabetes
 obesity.
BIOACTIVITY OF MILK-DERIVED PEPTIDES ON
CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM
 Antihypertensive effects
 The precursor products that confer this potential in milk are
the various subunits of milk protein, casein and whey protein.
These precursors include αs1-, β-casein, α-lactalbumin, β-
lactoglobulin.
 These precursors yield peptide fragments (such as VPP, IPP)
which have angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory
effect.

CONCLUSION

 Bioactive peptides can be obtained from different sources of

nature. These peptides exert positive effects on physiological
health of human. For this to happen, these peptides should be
synthesised to carry out their function specifically
RECOMMENDATION

 More studies should be conducted towards the search for

bioactive peptides of food origin, as a means to target,
prevent, or ameliorate disease causing conditions which poses
threat to the biological system.
