OF PATRIOTISM

10
Summary of the poem
Bharat desh’ is one of the important patriotic poems of
Subramania Bharati that expounds patriotism, rich in
symbolic connotation and profound in spiritual content.
The poet wants that with the name of Bharat Desh on our
lips we should get rid of our fear, sorrows, distress and
poverty. Having the name of our country on our lips we’ll
remove all the negativity and evils. We’ll become self
dependant , we’ll make tools and weapons, produce paper
and set up schools as well as factories. we’ll unravel the
mysteries of the space and the ocean. We’ll expand both
our spiritual and scientific knowledge. With a pride of
patriotism we’ll perform every work with utmost sincerity
and will work hard to climb the heights of success and
make India a prosperous country.

11
EXPLANATION OF THE POEM
With the name of Bharat Desh on our lips,
Let us shake off our fears and poverty
And overcome our sorrows and enemies.

The beginning of the poem ‘ with the name of Bharat Desh on our lips’ exhibits
poet’s strong patriotism. Here the poet wishes that we should ignite the sense of
patriotism in us and should make this as our strength to remove fear and poverty
from our country and overcome our sorrows and enemies. Everybody should
enjoy their life with out any fear and should be able to fulfil the minimum needs to
live a simple life. We should be able to overcome our personal grief and our
enemies. Here by enemies the poet means both the outside as well as our own
negative traits which acts as a hurdle to be an ideal human being.

12
We shall stroll on the snow-clad silvery heights of the Himalays.
Our ships shall sail across the high seas.
We shall set up schools – all sacred temples for us,
and proudly thump our shoulders and utter
the name of this land of ours, Bharat.

The poet appeals everyone to join hands to build a happy , developed country. He says
that we , Indians are strong and efficient enough to touch every height .For us
nothing is impossible . We shall climb up The Great Himalays, which is known for its
magnanimity and beautiful snow covered silvery heights , and with a pride shall
have a leisurely walk on it. Our ships shall also sail in high seas symbolising our
progress in trading with other countries. We shall also set up schools so that every
child will quality ,basic education and no one will remain deprived from it because
education and development go hand in hand.
And with a great pride we’ll thump our shoulders and utter the name of our
motherland Bharat.

13
With the name of Bharat Desh on our lips,
Let us shake off our fears and poverty
We shall make tools and weapons
we shall produce paper.
We shall open factories and schools.

‘With the name of------poverty’ this is a repetition of lines which enhance the
sense of patriotism .The poet wants every one to recharge himself/herself with the
spirit of patriotism and with a strong faith on the motherland try to work hard to
shake off their fear and poverty.
Here he wants to say that We shall not only make tools and weapons to protect
our country but also produce paper to educate and civilize the people. We shall
open schools to empower every one with knowledge and open factories to give
employment to our young mass.

14
We shall never be lazy or weary
we shall be ever generous
we shall always speak the truth.
With the name of Bharat Desh on our lips
let us shake off our fears and poverty

We shall never be lazy or tired. We shall work hard with out losing hope from
ourselves or our country and shall remove all the evils and progress towards
prosperity.
We shall always speak the truth and be compassionate and kind towards everyone.
Even the father of our nation, Mahatma Gandhij , had also given stress to be
truthful and compassionate.

15
Both scriptures and sciences we shall learn,
the heavens and oceans we will explore;
the mysteries of moon we shall unravel,
the art of street-sweeping ,too, we shall learn.
With the name of Bharat Desh on our lips, let us shake off our fears
and poverty.

According to the poet we shall learn both the scriptures and sciences because
Scriptures teach us how to behave and improve our moral values , they connect us
with the Almighty and hence they are needed for our spiritual enhancement
where as learning of science helps us to know the laws of nature ,the discoveries
and the inventions and help us to create new technologies using them.
We shall explore the space and oceans and discover the mysteries of the moon. We,
the people of India , shall look up to every profession with respect and shall not
tag any job or work with social status or false pride. We shall learn to do every
work with utmost sincerity.
