Used to / Would –
Be Used / Get Used

Used to - Would
We use used to and would to talk about things that
happened regularly in the past (past habits – repeated
actions) but no longer happen now.

She used to live in London when she was a girl. She doesn´t
anymore.

They would talk for hours every Sunday at church.

Used to
Form:
I used to go fishing.
He didn’t use to eat pizza. I never used to eat out.
Did she use to like math?
Where did they use to play soccer?

Use:
Only to talk about repeated past actions (activities),
or states. Also, actions/situations that continued for
a period of time in the past.
For situations that are no longer true.
We use action/dynamic verbs and passive/stative
verbs.

Would
Form:
I would study hard especially for my English tests.
He wouldn’t go fishing every weekend. I would
never go swimming.
Would you play chess when you were a kid?
Where would they eat every weekend?

Use:
Only to talk about repeated past activities
(action/dynamic verbs).
Do not use it for states (stative/passive verbs).
Do not use it for situations – She would have baby teeth.

Examples
When we were kids, my mother would always take us to the park.

My father would never lend me his car on weekends.


My mother never used to lend me her car on weekends.

My mother didn’t use to lend me her car on weekends.


I used to wake up early on weekends. Now I need to set 4 alarms.
Peter used to think that he didn't need a raise. Now that he is
living alone, he realizes that he needs more money.
When I was a baby, I used to spill my food every time I ate.
My dad would sometimes come and take me out of school at
lunch time and we’d go to lunch together.

Be Used to
Be used to means “be accustomed to” or “be in the habit of”.
Form: Be used to + noun / pronoun / –ing form.

They are used to the cold. (present)


I don’t mind walking. I’m used to it. (present)
She wasn’t used to living in the country. (past)
He will be used to living in a smaller house.

Form:
I am used to fishing.
He isn’t used to this weather.

Only to talk about customs in different tenses.

Get Used to
Get used to means “become accustomed to”.
Form: Get used to + noun/ pronoun/ -ing form.

I am getting used to the weather. I get used to everything


easily. (present)
He didn’t like the P.C., but he got used to it. (past)
He was getting used to the car, but he had to sell it. (past)
She will soon get used to wearing contact lenses. (future)
