Concept of unity of
Muslim ummah
Ayesha Bibi

 Meaning of unity:
“Unity means “Al-infarad” that is to say the
unique and distinctive and one, in fact it is
called about that particular thing which has
no part”. And the substance of the word
“Tauheed” is ( Wao Hay Daal) it means belief
in Oneness of Allah regarding His existence
and all Attributes”.
Meaning of ummah:

 “The word Ummah has been abstracted from the word

“Omm” which means the root and original. Such as the
word “Ummul Qurra” is used for Makka Mukkarama and it
is also used for every city which is the center of the
surrounding communities. The meaning of Ummah is a
group or community”.
 The literary meaning of Ummah is a group of human
beings who have a single aim in life and they cooperate
with each other to reach their common aim.
Constituents of unity:

 The constituents of unity are extremely prominent in all

the Islamic Injunctions and worships. By offering
congregational obligatory prayers, the purified
sentiments of love, equality and affection are
strengthened and on the propitious occasion of
congregational prayer of “Jumma-Tul-Mubarik” and
prayers of “Eid-ul-Azha” and “Eid-ul-Fiter” majority of the
Muslims gathers at central places to offer these prayers by
which a scene of concordance and unity can be observed.
Source of Muslim unity:
 Far-reaching and desired consequences can be achieved
by taking substantial steps and measures to create
awareness about Muslim Unity and to establish unity
among the Muslims.
 Islam always gives prominence to live together in unity.
Islam is the only religion which promotes unity and
solidarity of the Muslims. Islamic injunctions are
absolutely valuable to establish peace and security. Islam
also enjoins to adopt moderation in every sphere of life.
Holy Quran regarding unity of ummah:

 Surely, this is the fraternity of your Faith, a single

Faith, and I am your Lord; so worship Me”.
(Translated by Mufti Taqi Usmani). Hazrat Ibn-e-
Abbas (Allah be pleased with him) writes to
explicate this verse
Importance of Unity in Islam
Usama Khan
 • There is much we can gain by simply meeting the good. Our Prophet
(salla Allahu alihi wasallam) was a man of unity. He made sure that he
spread love and kindness wherever he went, and by these actions
alone, he attracted millions of people to join the religion of Islam.
Using The Power Of Unity for Change
lives
 Islam is actually a peace religion that strongly emphasizes harmony
and love among fellow Muslims. Great pressure has been placed on the
unity and development of the brotherhood among the Muslim brothers.
In the eyes of Almighty God all Muslims are equal and no height is given
to anyone on the basis of color, texture and religion.
Unity teaches us to be selfless

 • “None of you will have faith to love his brother as he does himself.”
[al-Bukhari]
 • Ideally, this account includes Muslims and non-Muslims in relation to
maintaining brotherhood. Imam an-Nawawi notes that here, Our Prophet
(SAW) guides us through dawah and how a believer should invite a non-
believer in Islam how much he loves Islam.
Knowing that we are like a structure

 • Our Prophet (saw) said, “Verily, the believers are like a structure,
each part strengthening the other,” and the Prophet clasped his
fingers together. [al-Bukhari]
 This hadith emphasizes the importance of supporting one another in
times of need and in need. It also involves expressing a sense of joy
and happiness when we help one another, viewing it as a privilege to
be able to satisfy another person’s needs.
Uniting through creating bonds

 • Unity is the key, but it includes the effort from the individual, as
Allah (swt) says in the Qur’an,“And hold fast to the rope of Allah all
together and do not part. And remember Allah’s favor upon you –
when you were enemies and He united your hearts and by His grace
you became brothers “.
.Unity through Giving To Charity

 The love that a Muslim harbours in his heart should be so sincere that
it makes him give towards those in difficulty. He feels the ache of
another person and he reacts in the kindest of ways. This brings forth
affection, mercy and compassion naturally towards others.Together,
much can be achieved. Unity unites people, creating love,
understanding, and generosity among themselves
Struggle for unity in Islam
M. Fahad Abdullah
 Islam-a religion of peace and unity. Unity is the strength and the unity
of people forms a strong nation. Therefore, this is one of the reason
Islam emphasize great stress on the importance of unity. The Islamic
concept of Towhid is similar to unity of humankind. The corner stone
in Islam is the unity of God. Allah’s unity teaches Muslims that they
should not divide persons into sections and sects .
Divine orders for unity.

 “ And hold fast the rope of Allah and not be divided” (The Holy
Quran)
 As for those who divide their religion and break up into sects, thou
hast no part in them in the least: their affair is with God. He will in
the end tell them the truth of all that they did. (6:159)
Struggle of Sufis and scholars for Muslim
unity
 By educating the masses and deepening the spiritual concerns of the Muslims, Sufism
has played an important role in the formation of Muslim society. In some countries Sufi
leaders were also active politically.
 Foundation of Jamiat Ulama-I-Islam
 was founded by Shabbir Ahmad Usmani as an offshoot of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind
(JUH) on 26 October 1945.
 Formation of Jamiat Ulama-I-Hind
Abdul Bari Firangi Mahali
Ahmad Saeed Dehlavi
Kifayatullah Dehlawi
Ibrahim Sialkoti
Sanaullah Amritsari and others.
Organization of Islamic cooperation
(OIC)
 The representative Islamic forum is consists of 57 Muslim countries
According to its charter, the OIC aims to preserve Islamic social and
economic values; promote solidarity amongst member states;
increase cooperation in social, economic, cultural, scientific, and
political areas; uphold international peace and security; and advance
education, particularly in the fields of science and technology.
Reasons of disunity in Islam
 Practical issues:
if Muslims agreed on the need for a caliph or some other formal leader
of the umma, it would likely introduce disputes over such practical
issues such as where the caliph would sit, where the “capital” would be,
what form the caliph succession would take, and how far caliph
authority would extend.
Abandoning the Sunnah and Quran:
The second most important thing that causes divisions is people
abandoning the Sunnah and Quran. The conditions of worship to be
accepted are that it should be done only for the Sake of Allah and on the
way of the Prophet.

FOR THE UNITY OF
MUSLIM WORLD

PAKISTAN’S ROLE IN MUSLIM WORLD

 The Islamic Republic of Pakistan maintains a large diplomatic
network across the world. Pakistan is the second largest Muslim-
majority country in terms of population (after Indonesia) and is the
only Muslim majority nation to have possession of nuclear weapons.
Pakistan essentially carries a special role in the comity of
Muslim nations due to its strategic location, its modern defense
system, its religious devotion and its effective role in
international politics. Pakistan’s foreign policy is inherently
non-interventionist, yet it has always been unequivocal in its
political, diplomatic and humanitarian support for the
suppressed Muslims all over the world like Palestine.
 Cont..
Pakistan’s leadership and Pakistanis sincerely desire to defend the
territorial sanctity of the holy land, yet in the given situation of Yemen
unrest, Pakistan has to play a larger role. In order to play an effective
role in rectifying the combat situation among the Muslim countries,
Pakistan needs to decipher the regional and political elements out of the
situation rather than entirely coloring it with a sectarian or religious
hue. Moreover, Pakistan’s role and actions should also justify its
traditional policy of non-intervention in the affairs of other Muslim
countries.
OIC (Organization of the Islamic
Conference) and Pakistan’s role in OIC

inter governmental organization consist of 56 States,

Pakistan’s relations with Muslim countries

 Bangladesh:
In 1999 President of Pakistan Pervez Musharaf visited
Bangladesh and tried to start a new age of relations between
both the countries. The conversation about removing the
bitter memories of the past and resolving the mistakes was
also done. Now the relations between Pakistan and
Bangladesh are better than before, but there is no warmth in
the relations which should be seen between two brother
Muslim countries. Some agreements about promotion of
science, education and culture and progress of agriculture
are recently executed between Pakistan and Bangladesh.
 Egypt:
The relations between Pakistan and Egypt went through from
different ages and finally reached to friendship and
brotherhood. CETO and CENTO agreements were the cause
of anger. The Suez Canal conflict was also a reason of
annoyance. In 1960, President Jamal Abdul Nasir’s visit
caused the misunderstandings removal. Zia-ul-Haq played
role to establish Egypt as a member of Organization of
Islamic Countries once again. On the Kashmir issue, Gulf War
and Afghan problem in 1979, both the countries had same
point of view. Not only the people of both the countries will
get benefit but also the unity of the Islamic world will be
strengthened if the relations keep going on the same way on
sacrifice and dedication basis.
 United Arab Emirates:
The relations between Pakistan and United Arab Emirates
are pleasant. In the past ages, United Arab Emirates has
established numerous organizations in Pakistan for example
urea, oil refinery, dairy farming, 320 mega watt power plant
etc. United Arab Emirates played an important role for
decreasing anxiety with India. United Arab Emirates is
playing an important role in economical progress of Pakistan.
 Libya:
In 90s, Pakistan started living in American influence because
of which its relations were bad with Libya. Because of the
fact that Libya is extremely against the imperial forces, the
relations between both the countries remained cold.
Agreements of economical and defense cooperation along
with employment, higher education, progress of human
resources, culture, transfer of prisoners and information
technology were executed between Pakistan and Libya. Both
the countries have also signed on the agreements of political
cooperation. Libya showed deep interest in investment in
the fields of industry, trade, banking, education science and
health.
 Central Asian Muslim States:
Six Central Asian Muslim States are respectively Tajikistan,
Kirgizstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and
Azerbaijan. The mutual cooperation of Islamic Republic of
Pakistan and nine Central Asian Muslim States has splendid
results. With economical and military cooperation and
mutual cooperation both the parties can rise with firm and
stable condition at international level. Pakistan is the
nearest and important neighbor country of nine Central Asian
Muslim States. This is why first of all Pakistan has played an
important role firstly for freedom and secondly for stability
of these states.
