Space Education & Awareness Program
 Space education and awareness help in promoting the potential of space applications and
their benefits to society
 It is important to gather stakeholders’ support for attaining objectives of space
technology programs and their sustainable development
 Lack of awareness and educational opportunities are the major causes behind space
sciences not being a career choice among young generation
 There is a need to develop human resources to gain optimum benefits from modern
space science and technology
 Attractive space educational programs serve as a source of interest, imagination and
inspiration

 Pakistan Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) is the key
coordinator for space related activities in the country
 SUPARCO is committed to promote education and awareness in space science and
technology
 Various activities are carried out throughout the year under the Space Education &
Awareness Program by SUPARCO

⋆ The global celebration of space through UN declared World Space Week 4 Oct 1957
(WSW), October 4 – 10 has been a popular and zealously conducted regular Launch of the 1st man-

World Space Week - 2019
⋆ WSW-2019 was conducted with a restructured scheme under which, the activity which was previously
conducted at SUPARCO sites or at selected institutions located in major cities of Pakistan, was now taken to
the doorsteps of educational institutions located in every corner of the country
⋆ A national competition namely WSW-19 ‘Best Space School’ was announced across the country through
⋆ Website
⋆ Media/ Newspaper advertisement
⋆ Letters/ correspondences
⋆ All educational institutes including schools, colleges, universities etc. were invited to register for the
competition and conduct WSW related thematic activities at their premises to compete for the
aforementioned title.
⋆ An overwhelming response was received from hundreds of institutions and over 1600 events were marked
during the week-long celebrations
⋆ Schools located in far, remote and rural areas also participated with great enthusiasm and creativity

⋆ The activities organized by schools were evaluated as per WSWA guidelines as well as innovation,
thematic relevancy, outreach and media impression

⋆ A large number of activities were conducted such as


⋆ Competitions (quiz, essay, declamation, poster, arts, drawing, models, water rocket etc)
⋆ Talks (lectures, seminars, workshops etc)
⋆ Demonstrations (sky/ telescope viewing, technology demos, space walks etc)
⋆ Fairs (Science fairs, exhibitions, technical stalls etc)

⋆ The event concluded with recognizing not only top 10 schools (5 each from public and private sectors)
from each province as ‘Best Space School’ but also felicitating notable efforts as ‘Best Space Enthusiasts’
and ‘Best Space Awareness Initiative’

⋆ Grand Space Fair and Exhibitions were arranged by SUPARCO in three major cities of Pakistan i.e.
Islamabad (Federal Capital), Karachi and Lahore
