He wrote many books about the Soviet Union, including biographies and studies on Stalin. In 1958, he became a research associate at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. In 1961, he became a lecturer at Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. He died in 1970. MAHATMA GANDHI Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (2 October 1869 – 30 January 1948) was an Indian lawyer, ani-colonial nationalist and political ethicist , who employed non violent resistance to lead the successful campaign for India's Independence from British rule, and to later inspire movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. Reason Of Champaran Movement When the indigo production collapsed in Bengal, the European planters of Indigo shifted their operations to Bihar. The farmers of Champaran, a village in Bihar, were forced to grow indigo by the European planters instead of the food crops which were necessary for their survival. The European planters were destroying the productivity of the land which was the main reason for the protest. Mahatma Gandhi was invited by some of the peasants to look after their misery. Gandhiji accepted an invitation and started a mass movement after seeing the plight of the indigo cultivators. ISSUE WITH FARMERS The farmers were thus forced to enter into another contract to grow indigo, even though it was not profitable for them. The ryots were never able to clear their debts and stop growing indigo. Debts were often passed from father to son. Planters also used intimidation and violence to compel farmers to grow indigo. The indigo farmers revolted in the Nadia district of Bengal by refusing to grow indigo. They attacked the policemen who intervened. The planters, in response to this, increased the rents and evicted the farmers which led to more agitations. NEED OF INDIGO Blue Dye was in immense demand in Europe. This compelled the British to push the Indian farmers to produce more indigo instead of the food grains on their lands. This excess cultivation of indigo not only reduced the soil fertility but also made the food grains less available. EFFECT OF INDIGO CULTURE The britishers forced Indian farmers to grow indigo because indigo planting became more and more commercially profitable because of the demand for blue dye in Europe. It was introduced in large parts of Burdwan, Bankura, Birbhum, North 24 Parganas, and Jessore (present Bangladesh). Indigo cultivation affecting the soil by soil erosion, taking the top part of the soil and making soil not good for cultivation. CHAMPARAN TURNING POINT Gandhi considered the Champaran episode to be a turning point in his life because he realized that civil disobedience, which had triumphed for the first time, could go a long way in the freedom struggle. Moreover, he had succeeded in making the peasants aware of their rights and becoming confident. This success, thus, proved the effectiveness of Gandhi's method of non-violence and non- cooperation. Champaran episode was a turning point in Gandhi’s life. He declared that Britishers could not order him about in his own country. In whatever he did, he tried to mould a new free Indian who could stand on his own feet and thus make India free. • BIBLIOGRAPHY FLAMINGO(TEXTBOOK ) • https://www.wikiwand.com • https://www.brainly.com THANK YOU!
