Rhythm and Blues Musical Genres

BOLIA IOANA-ADNANA
• For decades, the Billboard Hot 100 and
Introduction: Top 40 charts have been populated with
rhythm and blues, an American musical
genre first developed by Black artists in
the mid-twentieth century.
• I chose this topic because I believe that
this unique genre had a huge impact in
American history by simply
embodying what afro-american people
were living during the post-war era.
The Beginning of R&B
• The great migration of Black Americans to the
urban industrial centers of Chicago, Detroit, New
York City, Los Angeles and elsewhere in the 1920s
and 1930s created a new market for jazz, blues, and
related genres of music.
• Firstly, R&B music was called "race music" or
"sepia series", terms which originated in the black
comunities.
• Later it was changed to "Rhythm and Blues" by
Jerry Wexler, the director of Billboard's magazine,
in 1943, but he took credit for it in 1948. He
changed the name because he considered that the
original term was deamining.
Lyrical Themes and Most Played Instruments
• The African-American experience of sorrow
and the struggle for freedom and joy, as well
as triumphs  and failures in terms of
relationships, finances and aspirations,  often
encapsulated in R&B lyrical themes.

• The sound of the piano combined

with the trumpets , tenor saxophone,
bass, and drums was fitting perfectly
with the lyrical themes, creating a
unique way of expressing emotions.
R&B from The Late 1950's to The Late 1980's
• Firstly, according to Jerry Wexler, R&B records were only purchased by African-Americans
because there was no radio exposure in other regions, except those that were populated by
black people.
• More youths started to become aware of R&B in the early 1950's and began buying R&B discs.
• Eventually, white teenagers all around the United States turned their musical taste towards
Rhythm and Blues.
• Many new artists started to  arise and the R&B musical genre began to gain a lot of
popularity all over the world. By the 1970's, "Rhythm and Blues" had become a catch-
all phrase for soul, funk and disco.
• Elvis Presley was the first non-African American artist to be advertised as an R&B singer, after
his major two hits "Jail House Rock" and "Treat me nice".
• British Rhythm and Blues was a  musical
movement that gained popularity in the United

British Rhythm
Kingdom from the late 1950's to the early 1960's,
peaking in the mid-1960's.

and Blues • The Rolling Stones, Manfred Mann, the Animals,

Them, and The Spencer Davis Group were the
most popular british R&B groups in the
mid 1960's.
Contemporary Rhythm and Blues
• In the late 1980s and early 1990s, hip-hop started to capture the imagination of America's youth. R&B started
to become homogenized, with a group of high-profile producers responsible for most R&B hits. It was hard
for R&B artists of the era to sell their music or even have their music heard because of the rise of hip-hop, but
some adopted a "hip-hop" image, were marketed as such, and often featured rappers on their songs.
• Newer artists such as Usher, R. Kelly, Janet Jackson, TLC, Aaliyah, Destiny's Child, Tevin
Campbell and Mary J. Blige  started to enjoy success. L.A. Reid, the CEO of LaFace Records, was
responsible for some of R&B's greatest successes in the 1990s in the form of Usher, TLC and Toni Braton.
Later, Reid successfully marketed Boyz II Men.
• In 2004, 80% of the songs that topped the R&B charts were also at the top of the Hot 100. That period was the
all-time peak for R&B and hip hop on the Billboard Hot 100 and on Top 40 Radio

Queen of R&B
• Ruth Alston Brown was an American
singer-songwriter and actress,
sometimes known as the "Queen of
R&B". She was noted for bringing
a pop music style to R&B music in a
series of hit songs for Atlantic

Long", "Teardrops from My Eyes"
and "(Mama) He Treats Your
Daughter Mean".For these
contributions, Atlantic became known
as "the house that Ruth built".

physically, a well-written, well-performed R&B song will do
it."
