INTRODUCTION
A variety of items /material –services are needed by all of us
every day like cereals, fruits, vegetables, clothes, soap, books etc.
and these items can be purchased from the market. So when one
buys goods and avails services for satisfying wants, one becomes
a Consumer.
In simple words we could say
A consumer is an individual who purchases /uses /consumes
services ,items and products to satisfy wants and needs. All of
us are consumers one way or the other.
An ignorant consumer gets cheated or exploited by the sellers
and manufacturers.
Rights of consumers
• Right to Safety The right to be protected against the marketing of goods
and services, which are hazardous to life and property.
• Right to be informed The right to be informed about the quality, quantity,
potency, purity, standard and price of goods or services, as the case may
be so as to protect the consumer against unfair trade practices.
• Right to Choose The right to be assured, wherever possible, access to a
variety of goods and services at competitive prices.
• Right to be heard The right to be heard and to be assured that consumer's
interests will receive due consideration at appropriate commission.
• Right to Redressal The right to seek redressal against unfair trade practices
or restrictive trade practices or unscrupulous exploitation of consumers.
• Right to consumer education Right to acquire knowledge and abilities
encouraging and assisting in wise selection of goods /materials and
services.
Consumer Education
Consumer education is the preparation of an individual to be
capable of making informed decisions when it comes to
purchasing products in a consumer culture . It generally covers
various consumer goods and services, prices, what the consumer
can expect, standard trade practices, etc. While consumer
education can help consumers to make more informed decisions.
Consumer education focuses on both functional skills and rights.
These two elements are inseparable in the sense that awareness
of several rights leads to functional skills. There are also instances
when consumer education is conducted for the purpose of
changing consumer perceptions such as the educational drive to
increase consumer confidence in for example ecommerce.
Functions of consumer education
• Consumer education aims to help the consumer to gain maximum
advantage by improving their value and ability, and to make them
understand the economy and changing market circumstances.
• Every consumer has a different consuming attitude than the other
and learns new attitudes everyday
Importance of consumer education
Consumer education is pivotal within the buying society.
Consumers are informed on how to make better buying decisions
that directly affect the functioning of the economy. Consumer
education has become more relevant due to the rapid growth of
products in the market. Consumers need to stay informed on the
effects of the economy in order to make the best decisions.
Why is consumer education?
Consumer education provides the public with the information it
needs on products and services so it can make well-informed
decisions on what it is purchasing and from whom it purchases. It
helps consumers understand their rights and become active
participants in the buying process.
Consumer Aids
A consumer aid is defined as “Anything written or illustrated that assists a
consumer in the selection of items /goods and materials”. Various consumer aids
available to the consumers are :
• Labels (information about the product may be given in the form of labels
supplied by manufacturer of the product)
• Standard marks (Govt. certification schemes provide standard marks to the
items. It is mandatory on some items of mass consumption connected with health
and safety)
• Advertisement (It is a means by which manufacturers communicate persuasively
to the target buyer about their products)
• Leaflets (Are handouts with one or more folds of paper. It inform the consumer
about the existence of the product –its salient features and uses.)

Government of India has created some standards for almost every product to
protect the economic interests of all citizens. These standards are like “AGMARK”
for agricultural products, ISI mark for electric products, BIS mark for gold
ornaments and “FPO mark” for all the “processed fruit products“, Nonpolluting
vehicle mark “ for selling of new vehicles.
OPERATIONAL CONCEPT

• Consumer Decision Making


A Process by which consumers identify their needs, collect information,
evaluate alternatives, and make the purchase decision. These actions are
determined by psychological and economic factors, and are influences by
environmental factors such as cultural, group and social values.
• Consumer Durable Goods
Consumer durable products are things that can be used for a long period
of time as they are not easily destroyed, Examples of durable goods
include; household appliances, machinery and sports equipment.
• Purchase Behavior
Purchase is to fully pay for a good or service to that good being delivered
or service being performed. To fulfill this usage; however, the connotation
of the word has started to shift to indicate a purchaser that is not
creditworthy.
Roles and responsiblities of
Homemaker as a Consumer
The role of home maker as a marketing agent of the family
assumes significance for the welfare and happiness of the family. It
is important for this that home maker knows their rights and duties
as a consumer.
Homemaker as a consumer can help themselves
a) Know what you want-
b) Intelligent Buying
c) Learn to deal with businessman
d) Learn to use what you have
e) Learn long term financial managemrnt
f) Learns to make plan work
g) Organisation of consumers
h) Ask for informative advertisements and labels
HOME MAKER AND HOME
EQUIPMENTS
As homemaker and home equipment users, knowledge of home
equipment selection, efficient use, and redress issues are
important for wise consumer .
With the wide availability of home equipment products and
retailers in the marketplace, as well as on the Internet and TV
shopping programs, comparison-shopping can be overwhelming
if the consumer is not aware of the considerations that should be
part of the purchasing decision. Selecting the proper equipment
to meet the needs of the family and the tasks at hand will provide
the consumer with product satisfaction.
Consumer responsibilities do not end with the equipment
purchase. Equipment operating costs can make up a large portion
of a family’s budget. choices related to the lifecycle costs of
appliances by gaining an understanding of energy efficiency
guides ratings, such as the Energy Guide label and the Energy Star
label. Redress issues and product warranties. As a consumers,
one must understand our rights and how to handle problems
with equipment when they arise. Warranties, extended
warranties of particular equipments.
